Grants Data from 990s

Hello All,

 

I am working on a project that is looking at grantmaking data of public and private foundations in the DFW region. I have a list of EINs for the identified foundations, but now I am to the point where I need to pull that data from the Schedule I of the 990 and 990-PF. I have been doing some research on how to use R for this project, but my brain simply cannot wrap around how to do this, and there are no video tutorials (to my knowledge) illustrating how to pull this off. I am a visual learner, so this project is difficult since I know there is an “easier” way to do this.

 

Does anyone happen to have a cheat sheet or set of instructions on how to use R (or other platform) to pull data from the 990 findings of a particular set of EINs?

You might check out the pre-packaged private foundation grant data provided through Open990:

I have seen additional efforts to extract grant data like this one:

https://nonprofit-open-data-collective.github.io/efile-grants-2010-to-2015/

But there is very little documentation about the process so I would want to check quality before putting a lot of trust in the process behind the extraction. 

Happy to chat about some R resources to get you started if you want to go that route.

Hi Colton,

I've been experimenting with grant data from e-filed 990PFs recently. I use Python generally (but the logic could generally be implemented in R), and I made my GitHub repository public so you can see my process/code so far: https://github.com/danielfonner/G2G-by-SMU-DataArts  . Note that this is looking specifically at 990PFs, but it could easily be adjusted to look at 990 Schedule Is.

As Jesse mentioned with the IBM Watson data, my goal is to replicate what IBM did.  So, you will see in the code 5 parts which extract the data and then connect the grantee data to specific grantees.  Part 2 of the code is probably most relevant to what you are attempting to do. (Note the code is not written in the most "Pythonic" way, but it has been where I've been experimenting.  I plan on digging more into this data in the coming months to improve it.)

If you look through that material, and it seems like it could be helpful to you, I'm happy to connect and have a conversation on how you could apply it to your specific work.
