Dear friends,
I am writing with an urgent request to help strengthen the nonprofit sector at this time of critical need and massive job losses.
The nonprofit sector is not only on the front lines of COVID-19 relief and economic recovery efforts, it is also the third largest private employer in the country.
Yet the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases nonprofit employment and wage data only every five years! This lack of information hampers job recovery efforts and leaves a major portion of U.S. employers and employees in the dark (at least 12.5 million workers prior to the pandemic).
Please join the Aspen Institute’s Nonprofit Data Project, Independent Sector, National Council of Nonprofits and Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies in requesting the release of nonprofit employment and wage data on a quarterly basis, putting it on par with other major sectors in the country.
The Department of Labor (DOL) is currently soliciting comments on its 2022–2026 Strategic and Evidence-Building plans. This is an opportunity for you or your organization to speak up by signing on to these comments to Secretary of Labor Martin Walsh.
As these comments state, “it is unfair for industries like goat farming and limousine service to receive regular quarterly workforce data, while the nonprofit sector—representing more than 10% of the nation’s private workforce—is required to purchase this information or wait years for it.”

On behalf of the Aspen Institute’s Program on Philanthropy and Social Innovation, thank you!
Warm regards,
Cinthia
