Dear all,
As Executive Director of the Luys Education Program and author of the content published on its website www.Luys.am. I want to thank all of you who are helping to spread the word about the program and the website. The Vision and Mission of the Luys Education Program described on the Luys website is informed by the many conversations that I have had with the founders and members of the Hiring Board of the Luys Foundation.
It pleases me to report that Luys decide to move fast and start its program despite the hardship of the world economic crisis. The web site went live a few weeks ago in May 2009. Since day one applications having been flowing-in every day, and we expect this to continue during the years to come. The website will be very active, growing and changing to match the needs of the students applying.
WWW.luys.am will NOT be a static information billboard. The aim is for the website to be a living organism, an Armenian world online ever changing and growing.
As we are starting out, our immediate focus between now and end of July 2009 is of course on the students who need our support for the academic year of September to July 2009-2010. We need to think both at the micro level and the macro level.
In August, as stated on the front page of the Luys website, we will hold a summit that will set our work in its full context, so that we can understand our mission and actions going beyond the simple process of giving grants. This is when we can also take time to address the various questions that such a program undoubtedly raises.
Right now the discourse about Luys is happening without the appropriate context and without a full picture of why we have such a program, what the ultimate goal is, and how we want to achieve it – without a clear picture of how each participant can not only receive but also give.
Our August summit will offer such an opportunity and will provide a platform for a constructive questioning and discussions.
In closing allow me to quote Victor Hugo: "There is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come." It is obvious that a powerful program such as Luys is the result of many years of hard work and reflection by many people, and I would like to take an opportunity to thank them all: students, faculty, parents, social activists, and government officials who have each contributed to making the time right for such a program to happen, and to thank the founders and donors for making it real.
I look forward to our August summit and to working with all of you, in the Armenian world, who want to contribute to making a difference.
I remain sincerely yours,
Jacqueline Karaaslanian
