Hi all,

I was substitute-teaching at the Thompson School in East Arlington on Friday 9/15, and had the luck to see three adult bald Eagles wheeling through the sky together, relatively low.  They were not interacting at the level of grappling with talons out, but they were definitely showing some sort of group behavior.  It was pretty amazing!  I have seen 2 adults at a time here in Arlington but never 3.  Wondering if there has been any eagle drama recently?

Warmly,
Karin T

Thanks for your interesting report, Karin. You likely saw KZ and Fae (Female Adult Eagle), his mate, and a visitor/intruder. September is when hundreds of eagles migrate back south from summering in the cooler northern areas, so this adult could have been passing by heading for Florida, Georgia, etc. It might have been a floating local adult, looking for a prospective mate or territory. Either way, it is likely that yesterday's encounter really was not a "friendly" one,  though you did not see any tail chasing or extension of talons. KZ and Far are territorial to the Mystic Lakes and do not want other adults around their immediate nesting territory. They prefer to quietly in a straightforward manner diplomatically escort the uninvited visitor from their territory. If the visitor elects not to leave, then the resident most threatened would become likely more aggressive.
When you see 3 or more adults together, try to judge if one or more are noticeably smaller (likely male) than the others (likely female). And you might be able to see if any of the birds have color bands. (KZ does. Far does not have any bands.) If you see adults tail chasing now, that is defensive/aggressive behavior.
Due to a family illness, I am no longer able to observe the birds daily, so reports like this are helpful to understand what is going on with them. I expect in the next several weeks they will begin more intensive work on their new nest in the "old nest tree" on the lower Mystic Lake.

Best,
Paul

This morning an adult bald eagle was circling over Spy Pond. I didn't see any other eagle in the vicinity.
