There’s a downy woodpecker who visits my porch and eats a few seeds and drinks from the hummingbird feeder. He also pecks at a candle. It’s in a short glass that he sits on while he pecks and the whole top of the candle is pockmarked. Why does he do this? It’s likely a scented candle. Is the scent perhaps a factor? I doubt it’s “good” for the bird, but is it bad for him?
