Good afternoon, Vision Zero Stakeholders – See below for February action items and program updates!
Action Items:
- Reminder to send your organization’s comments on the draft action items by Friday, February 27. See attached for the excel
sheet in which you can review the proposed actions with your organization and add your comments. Thank you to those who have already sent feedback!
- Please
share your preference for our next meeting to be in-person versus virtual using this form by Friday, Feb 27, as well.
- Help us share the February behavior campaign:
It’s not a race (see graphics attached)
- Have an event coming up in April? Let us know! We’re looking for pop-up event opportunities during our second round of engagement Apr 1 – 30.
Program Updates:
- Downhill Bike Lane/Right Turn Conflict Pilot
Findings & Close Out: Given positive feedback and an overall 40% reduction in speeds for right turning vehicles, we are adopting the use of mini-speed humps and flex posts as quick-build tools to harden right turns across bike lanes and reduce the
risk of a right hook vehicle-bike crash. Future applications will apply these treatments to locations that experience bike lane and right-turn conflicts, including at locations that do not have a downhill slope.
View the pilot projects page.
- Tactical Speed Humps Pilot Winter Weather Update: Following the major snow events this winter, we have inventoried our
tactical speed hump pilot locations and identified repair needs. We
will be repairing the locations at the end of the season once the threat of snow events diminishes. Some of the humps will be repaired with tactical materials while others may be replaced with asphalt. Stay tuned to
our newsletter for updates on the repairs and the tactical speed hump pilot in the coming months.
- First
High-Injury Safety Audit of 2026: We’re heading out to S Glebe Rd tomorrow for our first HIN safety audit of the year. We’ll be looking at the segment from Columbia Pike to 24th Rd S to identify quick-fix opportunities on the corridor that
we will prioritize with the Virginia Dept of Transportation (who owns Glebe Rd), as well as keep an eye toward long term improvements that we can start working toward. Stay tuned for post-audit documentation coming this spring.
- Vision Zero Drivers Ed Quiz Lives On: On January 21, Vision Zero staff met with members of
Arlington Neighborhood Village for their Coffee & Conversation series. At the meeting attendees learned about some of the safety projects they have seen around in Arlington and staff presented our
Drivers Ed Quiz. Attendees had great questions and feedback for the quiz. Due to the success that we’ve seen with the quiz—both through online engagement and through community presentations—we are going to create a 2.0 version with additional questions.
Please share your ideas on “transportation safety things people should know” with me so we can incorporate it into our updated quiz later this year!
Please reach out with questions or suggestions. We’re excited to hear your feedback on the draft action items by Friday and look forward to meeting with you again in April!
