Remembering Recent History with WalkArlington

Join WalkArlington this Saturday, September 13, in an exploration of Halls Hill, a historically African American neighborhood in Arlington known for its strong sense of community.

The tour will visit the Segregation Wall and the Langston-Brown Community Center, and will feature six stops along the way. Participants will hear from Wilma Jones, president of the John M. Langston Citizens Association and author of My Halls Hill Family: More Than a Neighborhood, as well as other great speakers.

This event is a great reminder of the very real history of segregation that took place in Arlington's not too distant past, and the impacts that such policies had on Arlington residents.

BIKE BUS: Moving Cities toward Joyful, Child-Friendly Streets • Guest: Sam Balto
Date & TimeSep 16, 2025 11:00 AM Eastern Time (US and Canada)
Webinar ID838 7121 0917
DescriptionBIKE BUS: Moving Cities Toward Joyful, Child-Friendly Streets

The Bike Bus is more than a ride to school, it is a joyful movement that shows what our cities can look like when we design streets through the eyes of children.
By replacing car lines with community-powered rides, Bike Buses give kids independence, families connection, and neighborhoods new life.
This presentation will explore how the Bike Bus has grown from a local idea into a global movement, why it resonates so deeply with families and city leaders, and how it offers a simple yet powerful blueprint for creating safer, healthier, and more inclusive streets for everyone.

After leading walking school buses for 6 years, Sam Balto launched his first bike bus at Alameda Elementary in Spring 2022 and the rest is history. His weekly bike bus has gained international attention, even bringing the conversation about children’s active transportation to The White House. The ride has drawn notable guests, including Justin Timberlake, who joined in and told Sam, “You’re bringing joy to a lot of people out here.”
Building on this momentum, Sam founded Bike Bus World, a nonprofit dedicated to inspiring and supporting communities everywhere to start their own bike buses.

Share your feedback on Downhill Bike Lane & Right Turn Conflict by September 26th

This summer, we launched the Downhill Bike Lane & Right Turn Conflict Pilot Project to address potentially high-risk conflict points when a driver makes a right turn across a downhill-sloped bike lane.  The four pilot locations were chosen because they feature right hand turns across downhill bike lanes, three of which were identified during the High-Injury Network safety audit of Clarendon Blvd:

  • Clarendon Blvd & 17th St N
  • Clarendon Blvd & N Scott St
  • Clarendon Blvd & Driveways Across from N Troy St
  • Wilson Blvd & N Manchester St

View the project info sheet.

We are seeking feedback as we assess the impacts of and next steps for this pilot. Share your thoughts on the pilot by Sept 26 by answering these five questions.
