Steve, this article bemoans the unsafe transportation system in India. They are using "bike" mostly for "motorcycle."

Why 9 Bike Riders Die Every Hour

Mumbai: Indian roads are increasingly becoming more dangerous for its most vulnerable users, an IndiaSpend analysis of national data shows. In a decade to 2023, road accident deaths increased 24% to about 173,000, but pedestrian deaths nearly tripled, those of two-wheeler riders nearly doubled, and cyclist deaths rose 13%.

Yes, no doubt it has all sorts of problems. My experience was limited to the city streets, where traffic is congested, and people have to negotiate every move. Highways and other aspects are probably very different. And…it’s a big country.
From what I saw, the places where we were aren't the first places to look for improvements. Except for sidewalks, as I mentioned.
Cheers

Also, it seems their per capita rate is pretty similar to the US overall, with 2-wheelers being a higher percentage, probably because they are a greater proportion than in the US

All that said, the 1 million people who die globally every year in traffic is way, way too high.
