We are excited to launch the Leading Through Interval (LTI) safety pilot that will reduce conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists in the crosswalk and turning vehicles. The pilot will introduce a signal timing strategy that creates a brief interval at the start of the signal phase, allowing vehicles traveling straight to proceed, while turning traffic is paused. At the same time, pedestrians and cyclists will be permitted to move forward during the active “walk” signal. The illustration below depicts the beginning of the LTI signal. Once the LTI ends, vehicles waiting to turn may proceed. This pilot aims to keep mainline traffic flowing while proving more flexibility for a longer pedestrian head start.

Pilot Locations were chosen due to their geometry and existing dedicated turn lanes, as well as crash histories and high volumes of pedestrian and vehicle activity:
