FYI - but what will stop left-turning drivers?

New Safety Pilot Project Coming Soon: Leading Through Interval (LTI) Pilot

We are excited to launch the Leading Through Interval (LTI) safety pilot that will reduce conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists in the crosswalk and turning vehicles. The pilot will introduce a signal timing strategy that creates a brief interval at the start of the signal phase, allowing vehicles traveling straight to proceed, while turning traffic is paused. At the same time, pedestrians and cyclists will be permitted to move forward during the active “walk” signal.  The illustration below depicts the beginning of the LTI signal. Once the LTI ends, vehicles waiting to turn may proceed. This pilot aims to keep mainline traffic flowing while proving more flexibility for a longer pedestrian head start.

LTI City of Pitt

Pilot Locations were chosen due to their geometry and existing dedicated turn lanes, as well as crash histories and high volumes of pedestrian and vehicle activity:

  • Wilson Blvd & N Lynn St – Installation TBD
  • Washington Blvd & 10th St N – Installing late October

Timeline:

  • Summer 2025: Collect Before Data
  • Fall/Winter 2025: Launch New Signal Timing
  • Winter/Spring 2026: Collect After Data & Public Feedback
  • Summer 2026: Next Steps
