Dear Community Member:
Arlington County Board approved construction contract of South Walter Reed Drive from 5th Street South to Columbia Pike at the May County Board Meeting. The project will bring substantial improvements to the corridor, including protected bikes, bus boarding islands, safer parking lot driveway access, signalized intersection at 9th Street South, street trees, and wider sidewalk at single family block from 6th Street South to 7th Street South and on both sides of Walter Reed Drive from 9th Road South to Columbia Pike. The project will also remove existing medians, repave the street, and install parking and travel lane markings.
Construction is anticipated to start in late June or July 2025 with the realignment and signalization of 9th Street South intersection. For this portion of the work, construction crews will demolish the center medians, rebuild four corners of the intersection to include curb extensions, and install traffic signal equipment.
County staff will be determining the start date and sequence of construction with the contractor in the coming weeks. Once a construction start date is determined, it will be posted on the project webpage and shared via newsletters and social media. You may find the project page at: https://www.arlingtonva.us/Government/Projects/Project-Types/Transportation-Projects/South-Walter-Reed-Drive-Complete-Street. Please also consider signing up to receive Columbia Pike transportation updates. Notice will also be sent directly to properties immediately adjacent to 9th Street S/S Walter Reed Drive intersection.
Please feel free to contact me by phone or email if you have any questions.
