Hi all,
I’m a little late in announcing it, but I will be hosting Astronomy Nights in Robbins Farm Park again this summer. The first night will be this coming Saturday, June 13th, where we’ll be getting a last glimpse of Jupiter as it sets in the west at sundown. Venus follows Jupiter down shortly after. I’m not sure exactly how long we’ll see Jupiter over the houses and trees in the west of the park, but the forecast is looking fairly promising at the moment as far as clouds go, so hopefully we’ll have some good viewing time!
For anybody new, Astronomy Nights are free and fun for all ages! We’ll meet at the benches that overlook Boston and one or more telescopes will be set up for looking at objects in the night sky. It is often buggy in the park after dark, so bug spray is a good idea (though don’t apply it near the telescopes!). You’ll probably want a flashlight for coming in and out of the area, but I do ask that you keep a close eye on kids with flashlights and ask them to keep flashlights pointed down at the ground. You can see a lot more in a telescope if your eyes are used to the dark, and while it can take half an hour to get fully dark adapted, you can lose that very quickly with a beam of light from a flashlight. So let’s keep it dark as a benefit to us all!
Hope to see you all there under clear skies! (And I hope my permit comes through before Saturday!)
