to ARKs

Dear All,

As you may have noticed, the NAAN request form (http://n2t.net/e/naan_request) has been improved to make it easier to update registry entries. If you have created ARKs, I encourage you to check the resolver (or organizational) address and contact information that was provided when registering, and update it if necessary.

Why do you need to update this field?

When institutions request a NAAN, it is often at a very early stage in their use of ARKs. At that time, they usually do not have the address of a resolver to put in the "Organization Base URL" field. And when later on such a resolver is set up and operational, they may forget to report it.

What is the point?

To avoid publishing ARKs with an institutional domain name, which is often transitory, the CDL offers use of the domain name of the n2t.net resolver, which is neutral, relatively opaque and maintained by CDL. If for technical reasons (change from HTTP protocol to HTTPS, for example) or political reasons (change in the administrative divisions) a local resolver's address should change, the registered organization just needs to update its entry in the registry, and users resolving its ARKs via n2t.net will be redirected correctly.

If you have chosen to publish your ARKs with a resolver based on your own domain name, you may still wish to keep the CDL informed as it changes. An informed user finding an ARK whose resolver address has changed could query the global resolver https://n2t.net/ and would then be correctly redirected.

You will find more details on this subject in these sections of the ARK FAQ at https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/ARKs/ARK+Identifiers+FAQ#ARKIdentifiersFAQ-IfmostARKsrunontheirownresolvers,whyistherealsoaglobalresolverforARKs?

How do I update it?

If you are in doubt about the resolver base address you provided to CDL, simply query the global n2t resolver at the following URL: https://n2t.net/ark:/ [your NAAN]. For example, http://n2t.net/ark:/12148 will return the French National library (BnF) entry. There you will find the information submitted, including the resolver address in the "redirect:" field (without the contact information, which is kept only in the private version of the registry).

If the address provided is not correct, go to the form and select "To update an existing NAAN" to change it.

Kind regards,
