Hi devs,
here in University of Bari (Italy) we are using ARK to maintain
documentation about our archaeological excavations. We discovered ARK
thanks to an email Jess Ogden sent me in June 2011, when we were near
to write a new system from scratch.

A couple of ideas:
- ARK needs a Debian/Ubuntu easy packaging solution, we'll probably
create one later this year
- ARK needs a Wordpress-like first configuration solution, we'll do
some tests
- it might be interesting to develop a LaTeX or Python ReportLab
extension to export data
- we need to customize the Stratigraphic Unit data sheet (we need some
more fields)

We believe in an easy approach to web-based recording systems in
archaeology, and there are some ideas about writing some tutorials to
explain how to use, modify and extend the ARK systems, but we need
your help.

First of all, we need some help to write down a quick and dirty guide
to SU customization, anyone interested?

Thanks and keep ARK rockin'

Hi Francesco -

Thanks for your post - and I'm very glad to hear that you have taken up use of ARK and clearly been looking into extending it - which is always great to hear! Do you happen to have any online examples we could look at?

All of us on the dev team (I would venture to say) think we really need to do some work in creating more 'Admin' tutorials including some of the customisation of the default configuration discussed below. We've also been discussing a 'wordpress style' install for some time now - but I'm still convinced that we are not far off of this as it's becoming easier and easier to install.

We should certainly all discuss your points below further (and any other ideas/suggestions you might have) and am curious if you or anyone on your team might be coming to the Computer Applications in Archaeology (CAA) conference in March in Southampton, UK? We are doing a ARK workshop there on the Monday, but a few of the L - P ARK development team will be there during the week so might be a good chance to sit down and discuss plans? It's a great conference and we hope to get a lot more ARK installations out there as a result. Not to mention we've been making lots of changes to the ARK code recently which include some bug fixes to v1.0 as well as some new functionality.

Any chance you will be at CAA?

Best wishes,
Jess

We're testing some modifications to the ARK code (small things,
really) and in the same time loading our data in this custom ARK
installation, so at this time our server seems more like a mess than a
nice-and-flawlessly-running archaeological database.

Indeed, we're progressively getting into the PHP code, which is
well commented but quite complicated for me -- I don't know much about
PHP.

While working on ARK code, I'll be happy to write some tutorials about
customization, although it will require some time in the next few
months. I'll report in this ML every progress about that.

Unfortunately, I'll not be at CAA, but there are good chances I'll be
in London several times in the next months.

Can I write here in ML if I need some help to understand the ARK code,
or should I contact someone directly via email?

Have a nice day
