to Arkaion Bellum (Ancient Battle and Warfare)
There's a very useful discussion of two of the themes that have been
preoccupying us (connections between Hellenistic and Roman tactical
systems and connections between Greek and Latin terminology) at pp.
326 et seq. of Everett Wheeler's paper "The Legion as Phalanx in the
Late Empire (I)" in Le Bohec, Yann & Catherine Wolff, eds., L'Armée
romaine de Dioclétien à Valentinien Ier, Paris: Boccard, 2004, pp.
310-358. This paper is the first part of a reworking and expansion of
Wheeler's 1979 article at 9 Chiron 303-318.
I've posted an excerpt (pp. 326-336) in the "files" section.
Best,
Mark
