Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it.1 Corinthians 9:24
Satchel Paige, the great baseball pitcher, once said, “When you’re running a race, don’t look back because somebody is probably gaining on you!” If you spend your life looking at others, if you’re just running the race for the accolades and the attention that others may give you, you’re going to be defeated.
If you look at the devil, you’ll to be distressed. Now, I think we need to be aware of the devil and we need to know who he is. But some people get so wrapped up in the devil they take their eyes off Jesus!
And in much the same way, if you look at other people, you’ll be disappointed because you’ll spend your life comparing yourself to how this or that person lives instead of focusing on how God wants you to live.
But if you look at Jesus, you’ll never fail. He’s the one who is your true example. So, as you live the Christian life, keep your eyes focused upon Jesus because eternal life with him is the prize at the end of the race!
Hebrews 12:1-3
Therefore since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. and let us run with endurance the race that God has set before us. Do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him he endured the cross disregarding its shame and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
