Dear Brother (Whosoever is the real author of this article),,
Salaam Alaikum,
We live in an educated world that of common sense and reason. We cannot just beleive what we read or what the media portrays or for any sake what so ever it may be even if a mullah/alim says from mimbar except if with reasoning, intellect, and facts. As educated literate people we know better than just to believe anything told or said unless if the claims are backed by scientific research and findings,it authenticity, source and its basis on shariah and religion etc.
1) In your article you mention the numerous medical advantages of Matam/Qaman/Zanjeer. What I ask is do you have any scientific proof on these? Any proper scientific research, published journal articles with results of these? Bse anyone can make up things such as red wine is good for your heart! Sorry Br, We live in an educated world where what you hear and read is not Gospel except for the Holy Book, the Quran and genuine Ahadith which of course are not open to personal interpretations as we choose to manipulate these to our advantages or narrow minds! All the benefits you mention are for Hijama or Cupping which is an entirely different thing from Qaman/Zanjeer etc.
2) Br, When you talk of Hijama cupping do u even realise how different it is from zanjeer i.e cutting ur self by shear force?? For your info hijama cupping is gentle method based on principle of suction which draws dirty bad blood as practiced in Asia in ancient times using horns or cups now days to create pressure difference and draw bad stagnant blood out. This has the numerous health benefits not Qaman/Zanjeer matam.
You cannot compare this to zanjeer what so ever form it may be in bse it is after all a violent act of a sword or blade cutting ur skin in random motion and force this only draws blood as result of a trauma and it is not bad blood that coms out and in no way is this called hijama/cupping or provide any medical benefits! ! And definitely this is not what the traditions ahadith you quote from the Prophet or sunni tradition relate to. If this was a case than it would be beneficial to self mutilate our bodies by cutting it and drawing blood! Cupping as you can read on below links is special method and its the pressure difference properties that draws bad stagnant blood out. Few of the many links highlighting this practice:-
3) When u quote the various hadiths such as prophet/Imam shedding blood and Imam Husein (A.S) blood in turbah we do sajdah on we are talking of blood of Masooms! These Masoom were sinless and did not ever forget Allah nor miss out on daily wajibaats such as obligatory prayers on awal waqt! Fasting,Hajj Zakat Khums, doing God,Forbidding evil and than they shed their blood out of pure faith for Allah! How many of us who are fanatical about zanjeer have ever in clean hearted with pure faith done all these wajibaats without a miss and even after doing that stayed away from back biting, vices, helped other muslims and to propagate our religion to other people in a positive way. Surely if you have done this than by all means do blood matam for it is after all what our Imams gave their blood to save the religion! But on Ashura we do blood matam and cry for our Imam and rest of year we revert to our sin ful ways and lives, Is this why Imam sacrificed himself and his fmaily so we could do Qaman/Zanjeer?
Imam Husein A.s on the day of Ashura gave us clear example when in the battle field by performing salat khawf, the wajib prayers although he was amongst enemies and in battle field but did not forgo his prayers.Imam gave his life and of his family and companions not bse we just shed tears and do zanjeer but to protect and revive the religion of his Grand father and Allah and uphold the righteousness.Any forms of self harm is Haram we cannot put out imams name in it surely again if it is a from pure heart, faith, We have followed our religion and the teachings of Aimaah and done wajibats than to that person who has the highest form of taqwa and faith zanjeer by all means is justified.
Personally growing up seeing this Blood matam, I am afraid I do not see one person who performed these was ever positive role model of Islam or it teachings and this isn't what our Imam died for or asked us of. Today this vary form of matam in non muslim communities reflects as a barbaric act and turns many away for embracing Islam or Shiasim which is religion of peace and highest of the morals!
To conclude, Blood matam is personal choice but labeling it as health benefit (Hijama is not zanjeer) has no basis nor mis interpreting the ahadith of our Aimaah towards it is right!
Also the examples of the various mojizas with blood are signs but how does it this relate to blood matam?? did they occur when at that spot there was blood matam going on zanjeer in whatever forms? or normal azadari and matam? Surely there is nothing wrong with our azadari and matams let us not mix these 2 diffrent forms of azadari.
The issue of Blood matam is one of the most controversial issues to extent whenever an Alim has spoken about it from the mimbars it has resulted into an outrage but the issue is where we are quick to attack this are we the followers of Ahlul bayt as they want us to be and than do these practice or do we choose what our fore fathers did and forget all the real wajibaats?
N.B:- Recently in Australia, I witnessed what I believe is an Afghani matam a very beautiful matam similar to Zanjeer except there were no blades on the chains but chains itself why not introduce such matams in our communities?
I do not know who the Shiekh in question is but pls do forward my email to him.
May Allah accept our Azadari..
Salaams and Duas,
Mehdi Bhimji.

‘O Sheikh’……..
Medical benefits of Matam/Qaman/Zanjeer
Every year on Ashura, millions of Shia’s throughout the world perform the Qaman/Zanjeer matam commemorating the tragedy of Karbala. If questioned on the philosophy behind performing Matam, Qaman, and Zanjeer; most would be at a loss to offer an explanation beyond the fact that it is performed out of grief for the tragedy of Karbala. So is it done for sawaab then? Again there would emerge uncertainty as most do not perform this deed for sawaab! Only the very pious think of Sawaab and perform deeds with that intention. Most of us perform a deed for one reason or another.
Do we pray Namaz for sawaab? No, we pray because it is wajib and we consider it a burden to be relieved from.
The Medical benefits of Matam/Qaman/Zanjeer:
Prevention of heart diseases and heart attack through hard Matam
Blood Matam (Qaman & Zanjeer) prevent the following:
Tuberculosis
Cancer
Blood related diseases & disorders
leprosy
Madness
Jaundice
Inflammation
Convulsions
Asthma
Eye problems
Blood Matam (Qaman & Zanjeer) help:
To increase memory & intelligence
To lower high blood pressure
To clean the cardiovascular system
To remove sludge blood from the body
To strengthen the heart
To cure back pain
To enhance sexual strength in men
To keep the body and mind healthy.
Before you think of me as a ridiculous fanatical enthusiast for the cause of Qaman/ Zanjeer Matam and decide to hit the delete button; I suggest you read the entire article! What’s the harm in reading it anyway?
The fact is that, what is seen as something undesirable is in fact very much in line with the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.). The azadar draws blood from the head, chest or back due to grief on Ashura. The Holy Prophet recommended and he drew blood on several occasions. The Shia is actually combining the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet with Azadari. In medical terms this practise is well known as blood letting or cupping. In Islamic Sharia it is known as al-Hijama; specifically mentioned and encouraged by our Holy Prophet.
What is Hijama?
It was a medical practise to cure almost every disease performed by the ancient Chinese for two thousand years and the Arabs. It was the most effective form of treatment which was later abandoned around the nineteenth century by the modern medical practitioners. It is removal or suction of blood after a cut has been made on the head, between the shoulders on the back, the base of the neck and on the chest. It is also performed on two points of the ankles as well as in some cases the toes. It is one of the most effective forms of treatments and does not require medicines.
Prophets Sunnah regarding Hijama (cupping)
Jabir bin Abdullah Ansari narrates that the Holy Prophet said:
“Indeed in Hijama there is cure” -Sahih Muslim: 5706
Abdullah bin Abbas narrates that a Jewish gave poisoned meat to the Prophet to eat. When he felt the effects of pain from it he performed the Hijama. –Ahmad’s Musnad vol1:305
Abdullah bin Abbas narrates that the Holy Prophet was cupped on the head. –Sahih Bukhari: 5699
H. Prophet: “Hijama is among the best remedies -Sahih Bukhari: 5263
Note to the Youths: As has been seen that these narrations have been derived from Sunni sources; showing that our Holy Prophet did Hijama (Zanjeer/Qaman). Why is it that they always ask us questions? Can’t we ask them too? We have always remained quiet. It is now time for us to ask them questions. Will they eat us if we ask them? If we do Hijama combined with Azadari it is strongly objected to; if they perform it, then it is regarded as revival of the Holy Prophet’s Sunnah! The Shia’s for years have been practising the H. Prophets Sunnah and have been deriving medical benefits without even being aware of the advantages. Hijama is making a big come back in Saudi Arabia and in the West. The practise was recently legalised as medical therapy in the UK recently. So my dear brothers in Azadari; do not back out or feel awkward or shy when someone casts a glance of contempt or tries to ridicule you with objections – the bottom line is they are the ridiculous ones!! Join us, shed blood for Imam Hussein and thereby benefit twofold: Sawaab for Azadari and great medical benefits!
Blood donating
Of course there will always come up the suggestion about donating blood. The difference between Hijama and blood donation is that in Hijama the cut is made under the skin and blood flows. In donating a syringe pierces the vein through which blood is drawn out. So there is a basic difference between the two and our Prophet recommended Hijama. The best thing to do would be to perform Qaman/Zanjeer (Hijama) on Ashura and donate blood to save life of others throughout the remaining year!
The skies wept blood when Imam Hussein (A.S) was martyred!
-Al Sawaiq al-Muhriqa page116/19
Imam e Zamana weeps blood for Imam Hussein
-Ziyarat e Nahiya
Most prophets shed their blood out of grief for Imam Hussein
-Bihar ul Anwar
Most miracles connected with tragedy of Karbala are either blood related or comprise of the colour of blood – Red.
Why Then O Sheikh……
Do you object to an azadar wishing to shed blood for Imam Hussein?
When……
Every day five times a day you perform sajdah on the earth which is mixed with the blood of Imam Hussein (A.S).
Every time you stand before the Almighty Lord to pray, think about it. Kindly open attachment to see the miracles which occurred in Jaffery Islamic centre in Miami U.S.A. & Al Mahdi centre in Dar es Salaam.
JazakAllah Khaira and kindly forward to others
