I discovered an easy way to help you find a purpose in your life.
It involves asking yourself just one simple question. I can’t take credit for this question as it came from one of the greatest minds of our time, Aaron Schwartz. This question had a tremendous impact on me personally when I was searching for my purpose, and even helped me decide to start my own company a few years ago.
The question to ask yourself
"You literally ought to be asking yourself all of the time – what’s the most important thing I could be working on in the world right now; and if you are not working on that, why aren’t you?" - Aaron Swartz
You're not alone
I highly recommend not being too hard on yourself while searching for your life’s “purpose”. I use purpose in quotes because this can actually be a dangerous label. I'm 36 and I've just recently determined my next big purpose. Many people don't ever nail down one single “purpose”. Your life may have many purposes when it's all said and done.
Label it as a “project”
A good rule of thumb is to try and switch the word “purpose” with “project” if you can. You can tackle massive projects, but they don't define you. If you can't meet your end goal, you are not a failure. This will help you pursue your goal with less fear and will make you more effective.
By trying to have one purpose in life, you may limit yourself and risk defining your life by one goal. Be open to what the universe has in store for you - you may not know it until it hits you in the face. You can't control EVERYTHING - even though you may want to.
In summary
You don't need a purpose to define who you are, but I'll be honest, there is nothing quite like the thrill and passion of having an important project and goal to work towards. I hope this simple question can help you find yours!
Stay great,
