 Foto 01: Diego Lizarraga (LU9MZO), alcune ore prima di realizzare la sua grande impresa Oggi vi racconterò la storia di Diego Lizarraga (LU9MZO), dopo il suo record mondiale di altezza nel programma SOTA sull'Aconcagua, il colosso di 6.961 metri sul livello del mare. È molto importante per me scrivere questo articolo come argentino che ora vive in Brasile, dopo aver preso contatto con un collega del mio paese, che ha realizzato un'impresa incredibile. Diego Lizarraga (LU9MZO), è un insegnante di educazione fisica di 38 anni, alpinista e radioamatore, che ha stabilito il record mondiale SOTA per la trasmissione ad alta quota. La data chiave è stata il 10 gennaio 2022, quando Diego Lizarraga (LU9MZO) è riuscito a trasmettere dalla vetta più alta d'America.
Foto 02: Diego Lizarraga (LU9MZO) inizia il suo sogno di stabilire il record mondiale di altezza SOTA L'Aconcagua è una montagna situata nel dipartimento di Las Heras, nella provincia di Mendoza, nella parte occidentale della Repubblica Argentina. Integra la Cordillera Principal, che è una componente della catena montuosa delle Ande. Con un'altitudine di 6961 s.l.m. è la vetta più importante degli emisferi meridionale e occidentale, la più alta sulla Terra dopo il sistema himalayano e la vetta più alta d'America. Diego Lizarraga (LU9MZO) ha realizzato un totale di 64 QSO, 33 in VHF, 16 in UHF e 15 in HF con il suo indicativo LU9MZO/M. Le frequenze utilizzate sono state le seguenti: in HF in SSB nella banda dei 40 metri su 7200 kHz, su 146.520 MHz in VHF e su 432.500 in UHF. Diego Lizarraga (LU9MZO) era già salito una volta in cima all'Aconcagua, 4 anni fa, ma solo come alpinista e in quell'occasione potè restarvi solo per 5 minuti, poiché soffrì di congelamento alle mani e dovette scendere rapidamente.

di alpinismo, è stato proprio grazie al
programma SOTA (Summits On The Air), che ha
trovato l'unione di due attività: alpinismo e
Ham Radio. L'Europa è dove questa attività è praticata di più, ma per coloro che ancora non conoscono il programma SOTA, posso dire brevemente che lo scopo principale è quello di promuovere l'attività di radioamatori da colline e montagne in tutti i paesi DXCC. Si
può partecipare in tre modalità: Activator, che
scala la montagna ed esegue l'attivazione, poi
come Chaser (cacciatore), che cerca di
contattare una vetta dal suo QTH e infine può
partecipare anche un SWL (ascoltatore), che
prende nota dei contatti tra i due. Le
regole sono molto semplici: l'operazione deve
essere effettuata senza l'ausilio di veicoli
motorizzati, solo in bicicletta o a piedi. Ad
ogni vetta vengono assegnati da 1 a 10 punti, a
seconda dell'altitudine o del grado di
difficoltà. Tutte
le apparecchiature devono essere trasportate
dagli operatori, si accetta solo il
funzionamento a batteria e i contatti con
ripetitori terrestri non sono validi. Per convalidare un'attività in montagna, è richiesto un minimo di 4 QSO (quelli con altri compagni in cima non sono validi). Esistono diversi diplomi e trofei, sia per attivatori, cacciatori e ascoltatori. Lizarraga (LU9MZO), con più di 50 attività prima
della grande impresa, aveva già 2 record
importanti. Domenica 7 novembre 2021 ha effettuato 11 contatti SSB sui 40 metri con OM di sei province argentine, dalla cima del Cerro Lomas Amarillas a 5.116 metri sul livello del mare. Quel traguardo è stato superato 14 giorni dopo, più precisamente domenica 21 novembre, quando ha completato la sua terza salita alla vetta del Cerro Plata a 5.949 metri sul livello del mare, questo significa che è riuscito a scalare 833 metri in più rispetto al suo precedente record. Dopo
questi due record, la nuova sfida era
trasmettere da 1012 metri più in alto, sulla
cima dell'Aconcagua, il colosso di 6961 metri
sul livello del mare. Per
questo, il contenuto dello zaino era molto
importante, come ho detto Diego ha già fatto una
scalata dell'Aconcagua nel 2018 come alpinista,
quando ha potuto trascorrervi solo 5 minuti a
causa del congelamento delle mani. Quindi
in tutta la fase di preparazione ha prestato
molta attenzione a mettere insieme un sistema
che gli permettesse di essere in onda in meno di
2 minuti. È così che ha sviluppato quello che
chiama "Mochi-Sota", attualmente composto da un
trasmettitore Xiegu G1M G-Core SDR QRP e
un'antenna delta loop; per i contatti VHF e UHF
ha utilizzato un classico portatile Baofeng. In un video in spagnolo sul suo canale YouTube, potete vedere una spiegazione del suo sistema. Ecco alcuni stralci
dell'intervista Diego,
quando hai iniziato a sognare di scalare la
montagna più alta d'America e quando si è
concretizzata davvero questa idea? Fin
da giovanissimo ho sempre sognato di scalare,
come lo definisco, il "tetto d'America", e
quell'idea ha iniziato a materializzarsi nel
2016, due anni prima della mia prima scalata. Che
ricordi hai di quella prima salita da
alpinista? È
stata una felicità enorme, come per ogni
ineguagliabile prima volta. Anche se ho potuto
restarvi solo per 5 minuti, perché ho iniziato
ad avere sintomi di congelamento alle mani e ho
dovuto scendere rapidamente. Quanto
tempo ti ci è voluto per fare questa seconda
salita? Sono
entrato nel Parco Provinciale dell'Aconcagua il
2 gennaio e ho raggiunto la vetta il 10 gennaio.
Qual
è stata la cosa più difficile che hai dovuto
affrontare in quei giorni di arrampicata? Beh,
dico sempre che la cosa più difficile non è
salire, ma scendere, perché è lì che si
verificano più incidenti. Dopo aver raggiunto la
vetta hai dato tutto, hai usato al massimo le
tue energie e poi quando scendi sei già esausto
e ogni passo falso può significare la morte. Come
ci si sente ad essere a una tale altitudine? Essendo
così in alto, il tuo sangue è molto denso e
circola con difficoltà, a questo si aggiunge la
disidratazione, perché lì è molto difficile
consumare liquidi. Nonostante sali nella
stagione estiva devi cercare di muoverti tutto
il tempo, praticamente non puoi fermarti perché
se lo fai congeli. Per questo motivo, ci sono
diversi campi base sul percorso di salita, dove
è possibile riposare e acclimatarsi. So
anche che hai dovuto vivere un’emozione
fortissima, vuoi parlarne o è ancora un fatto
traumatico? Posso
dirtelo, nessun problema, sicuramente ti
riferisci al fatto che ho visto il corpo di un
alpinista morto a soli 80 metri dalla cima,
senza dubbio è stata un'emozione molto forte e
mi dispiace molto per la sua famiglia. In queste
circostanze non c'è molto da fare, ho
immediatamente avvisato la Pattuglia di Soccorso
e Assistenza Alpina (UPRAM) della Polizia di
Mendoza tramite radio VHF. Più
tardi ho scoperto che era un ex soldato che
aveva deciso di arrampicarsi da solo, quindi
consiglio sempre di praticare questo sport in
gruppo. È stata la prima vittima dell'anno 2022
sull’Aconcagua, che ha il più alto tasso di
mortalità in Sud America, circa tre morti
all'anno. Ciò
è dovuto al fatto che è possibile raggiungere
l’inizio della salita con relativa facilità, e
persone senza la giusta preparazione fisica si
presentano per fare un tentativo. Scalatori e
alpinisti spesso svengono per il mal di montagna
e i cambiamenti meteo estremi, con forti venti a
causa della vicinanza della montagna all'Oceano
Pacifico, e spesso muoiono per congelamento. Da
quando sono iniziate le rilevazioni nel 1926,
più di cento persone sono morte sull’Aconcagua.
Non
vedi l'ora di raggiungere una nuova vetta, ad
esempio l'Everest? Penso
di essere più propenso ad una terza scalata
dell'Aconcagua piuttosto che cercare di scalare
l'Everest, comunque non perdo mai la capacità di
sognare, ecco perché non escludo nemmeno questa
possibilità, anche se gli aspetti economici in
quel caso sono cruciali per una spedizione. Il
costo può essere tra i 40 mila e i 50 mila
dollari, molto lontano dal mio budget. Forse ora qualcosa che potrebbe essere interessante per me è essere in grado di aiutare altri compagni alpinisti degli Stati Uniti o dell'Europa, o anche dal Giappone, ad esempio, in modo che possano venire nella stagione estiva in Argentina e cercare di aiutarli a svolgere un'attività SOTA sull'Aconcagua. radioamatori cileni che stavano aspettando che
Diego raggiungesse la vetta, con il suo grido
"Sono in vetta!! "
Infine, un video curato

della durata di circa 15 minuti, con foto
e video che documentano questa impresa,
nientemeno che stabilire il record
mondiale di altezza nel programma SOTA. Al

eccitato ed emozionato.

Sette Vette Le montagne più alte di ciascuno dei continenti sono conosciute come le Sette Vette. Il primo scalatore a raggiungere tutte le cime di queste montagne fu l'americano Richard Bass, dal 1983 al 1985. Raggiungere la cima di tutte è considerata una delle più grandi sfide nell'alpinismo. Everest
(Asia): 8.848 metri. Aconcagua
(Sud America): 6.962 metri. Mount
Denali (Nord America): 6.190 metri. Kilimanjaro
(Africa): 5.895 metri. Elbrus
(Europa): 5.642 metri. Mount
Vinson (Antartide): 4.897 metri. Mount
Jaya (Oceania): 4.884 metri. Considerazioni
finali di Martin Butera (PT2ZDX - LU9EFO) Gli
atleti eccezionali sono sempre stati considerati
eroi nelle società in cui si sono affermati. Da
questa parte del mondo, in Sud America, gli eroi
sono di solito solo i calciatori, quelli che
monopolizzano la qualifica di "atleta d'élite" e
gli spazi principali dei mass media. Gli
alpinisti di solito non sono riconosciuti e
ancor meno quelli che praticano l’attività di
radioamatori. La
montagna richiede prestazioni eccezionali,
semplicemente a causa del dislivello e della
mancanza di ossigeno mentre si avanza verso la
vetta. Richiede strategia, disciplina, un corpo
e una mente accuratamente allenati, una dieta
specifica e un valore quasi estremo, perché, in
sostanza, la morte si nasconde ad ogni passo. Questo
insegnante di educazione fisica, istruttore di
nuoto, alpinista e radioamatore, ha anche una
famiglia di cui prendersi cura. Ciò implica
essere una sorta di funambolo che si destreggia
tra l'amore per la montagna, la famiglia e il
sostentamento quotidiano. Perché, lo sappiamo,
gli alpinisti in Argentina ricevono poco o
nessun sostegno statale o privato. Speriamo che Diego e altri colleghi che condividono questo hobby continuino a realizzare i loro sogni, per questo abbiamo bisogno del supporto di tutta la nostra comunità Ham Radio e delle aziende produttrici di apparecchiature di radiocomunicazione.

TX5N DX-pedition to Raivavae, Austral Islands Posted: 08 Feb 2022 10:12 AM PST
 Several members of the Perseverance DX Group (PDXG) will activate Raivavae Island (Austral Islands), French Polynesia, April 15 – April 29, 2022 for approximately 12 operating days. The plan is to have radios on the air continually, as propagation allows. The call sign TX5N was issued for this project. Team members include: Steve W1SRD, Doris K0BEE, Rob N7QT, Melanie N7BX, Heye DJ9RR, Walt N6XG and Gene K5GS. The team is planning to operate 160m – 10m (including 60m), CW, SSB and Digital.

After having discovered that the CN-901V’s directional coupler has a very poor directivity - especially on 430 MHz band that make it useless as a VSWR meter - I decided to modify the module in order to reach an acceptable instrument functionality.

Just to remind the original coupler’s design , here is a picture of the module:  My target was to keep the modification effort to a minimum by reusing the steel box and PCB as they are. With such a constraints, the power metering performance of the instrument as a wattmeter is guaranteed only on the two amateur bands of 144 MHz and 432 MHz, just like the original design did.
This is the modified schematic diagram. 
I have found that the right termination impedance of the coupler’s arm - very important for the directivity performance - is neither 91 nor 100 ohm but 60 ohm; in order to have a 60 ohm 0.5W resistance two 120 ohm 0.25W resistors have been paralleled. The frequency response compensation is performed by a capacitive trimmer, I have used a high Q, 6 turns, precision air capacitor mod. 8053 made by Johanson or Airtronic; of course other type of trimmer can be used but with the above one the regulation is really smooth and accurate. The resistance in series of the 1K60 diode has been set at 150 ohm (instead of 100 and 150 ohm) for both arms, for symmetry reasons. All the components’ leads must be kept to a minimum length, the trimmers are soldered to the former adjustment slot and tilted in order to minimize the connection’s length to the microstrip.    The coupler’s calibration is made by feeding the unit with a signal generator, the other port is terminated, and the output voltage is read on a microammeter or a voltmeter. The trimmer must be adjusted in order to read the same value on the two frequencies of 145 MHz and 435 MHz, after a few cycles one will reach the equalization point; I used an HP8642B with its power output set at +20 dBm and a 20µA microammeter.
Once the directional coupler has been calibrated, it is necessary to mount it in the instrument, connect it to the PCB and calibrate the 200W and 20W readings of the forward power and the 40W and 4W of the reflected power by acting on the printed circuit trimmers. It will be necessary to use a dummy load of adequate power, to exchange TX and ANT port for the reflected power, and a 145 or 432 MHz transmitter. The CN-901V N must be connected in cascade with a calibrated wattmeter with which it can be compared, I used a precision power attenuator to terminate the instrument and measured the power with a Marconi 6960A RF Power Meter equipped with a 6910 power sensor. Since to make a proper calibration it is necessary to be able to generate power levels not lower than half of each full scale reading, so a power amplifier could help. I have tested the behavior of the VSWR meter with a 25 ohm load (VSWR=2.0) and with the complex impedances my 144/432 MHz collinear antenna gives in and out the specified frequencies of operation having as a reference instrument the HP8753ES. Since the readings were in good accordance the result of the modification is satisfactory.
Another modification could regard the main transmission line that has a return loss of only about -24dB@435MHz and that is too low in impedance, as the HP8753ES shows:
 By examining the main line one can figure out that, in order to improve the Return Loss figure, a couple of corrective actions could be taken.  1.The line impedance is too low and one could rise it by milling a bit, as per the green rectangle 2.The connection point of the connectors is too deep, this constitutes a parasitic capacitance and one could mill the pcb track as per the red rectangles. Since the overall performance is satisfactory, I did not implement the main line modification yet.
The original directional coupler of the Daiwa CN-901V N directional wattmeter has been modified in order to gain a proper level of directivity up to the 430 MHz band, the power calibration is guaranteed on both 144 and 432 MHz bands but not on the entire specified frequency range of 140-525 MHz. Calibration procedure of the modified directional coupler is simple and based on two precision capacitive trimmers. A further improvement could regard the main transmission line because its impedance is different from 50 ohm; a modification of the line could further improve the accuracy of VSWR readings. Daiwa CN-901V N has a good quality cross needle meter, a nice steel case with bumper protections; with the modified coupler it becomes a quality amateur grade power and VSWR meter for the 144 and 432 MHz bands. I would strongly suggest Daiwa to improve both the design and the manufacturing of this product. Daiwa CN901V N - Analisi tecnica di un wattmetro direzionale Posted: 17 Feb 2022 01:12 PM PST Ripropongo su questo blog due articoli che ho scritto dopo aver avuto la cattiva idea di acquistare un wattmetro direzionale Daiwa; i miei ricordi associavano a Daiwa l'idea di prodotti amatoriali ma di qualità ed ho comprato il wattmetro CN901VN - appartenente alla cosiddetta linea "professional" - di bell'aspetto ma di prestazioni scadenti. Daiwa, fabbricante un tempo giapponese, oggi commercializza prodotti "designed in Japan and Made in China" ma credo che ormai siano anche progettati (e male) in Cina. I post sono stati pubblicati su vari forum internazionali e ve li ripropongo integralmente chiedendovi scusa per l'inglese, lingua che conosco ma non amo. La prima parte riguarda l'analisi tecnica del prodotto, le seconda affronta il problema delle modifiche per consentirgli prestazioni dignitose sulle due nostre gamme dei 2m e 70cm. Angelo M. After having detected bad performances in terms of poor directivity of the CN901V N wattmeter, serial number 2007, I decided to disassemble it in order to understand how it has been designed and built.  The hearth of the instrument is the directional coupler I took out from the box:
 The unit is hosted in a tinned steel box with a red seal label covering a long slot in the upper wall of the box. I left in place the label and removed the cover after having taken away the solder seal put on its right side. Here is what the directional coupler looks like once the cover is removed:
One may immediately notice the
realization characterized by solder paste
residues, excess tin, tiny little tin balls
walking throughout the box.
At a first look one is impressed by the
two couplers - that should be designed to
operate up to over 500MHz - manufactured like an
audio frequency circuit: the components are left
with long leads.
There are long leads in order to make
possible the calibration of the unit by changing
the components’ position by acting with a
dielectric tool from the outside through the
alignment slot. By moving the components one can
obtain a power calibration but the consequence
of the distorted coupler’s topology and the
lead’s parasitic parameters is a very poor
directivity, especially on the 430MHz band, as a
result VSWR measurements are erroneous.
Here is the schematic diagram of the
unit.
 Let's see into detail of how the forward
power coupler is built.
 The 100 ohm 0.5W resistor has long
leads in order to be moved during the alignment
process, the left lead is also connected to a
weird place: it is soldered to the center of the
microstrip instead of being connected to its
land which, of course, has been left free.
The 150 ohm resistor which is in series
with the diode has an excessively long lead
connected to the microstrip and it has been
clearly moved during the calibration process.
As for the reflected power coupler, the
situation is as follows:
 The 91 ohm 0.5W resistor (the blue one
on the left side) has its right lead soldered to
the right land (unlike the forward coupler one)
but it is excessively long in order to move it
while calibrating. The 100 ohm resistor (on the
right and in series with the diode) has the lead
connected to the microstrip that are very long
and wandering. The welding of the pin of the
coaxial antenna connector to the passing
microstrip line is made with an excess of tin
and with the solder paste and dirties that has
not been removed; solder residues are interposed
between the main line and the reflected power
coupler‘s line.
By carefully watching the coupler’s
detail one can deduce that it seems to have been
designed by free hand drawing!
In fact the coupler’s line width is not
constant and also the other traces have not been
accurately drawn.
 The coupler performances have been measured by feeding the unit with a signal generator and reading the output voltage, in relative units, as a function of the frequency; here are the forward and reflected power characteristics that have the same amplitude only in two points: 145 MHz and 435 MHz amateur bands.  Since the power is proportional to the
square of the voltage, the accuracy of the power
readings outside the above two amateur radio bands
is completely out of specs.
The directivity is very poor but
measurements are not shown in this report.
The directional coupler, the heart and the most critical component of the Daiwa directional wattmeter, has inadequate performance for a device that must operate up to over 500 MHz. The components are left with long leads in order to change their position during calibration to achieve the desired frequency response of the wattmeter, the power calibration is reached only on the two ham radio bands and not on the entire specified frequency range. A consequence of the distorted coupler’s topology and parasitic parameters is a very poor directivity, especially on the 430MHz band, and so erroneous VSWR measurements. A careful examination of the PCB traces shows that it seems to have been designed by hand drawing! In fact the coupler’s line width is not constant and also the other traces have not been accurately drawn. Due to this design and manufacturing of the directional coupler, the performances of the Daiwa CN901V N, s. n. 2007, are really poor and far from what is stated in the product’s technical specifications. It is under study a modification of the directional coupler in order to make the instrument work properly. The pdf version of this analisys can be
