We tend to ignore them -- if we notice them at all -- but ants are among the most successful life forms on Earth.  There are thousands of different kinds.

 

And now the California Academy of Sciences is helping people to appreciate the world's diversity of ants.  It's assembling an online, hi-res photo gallery.

My story airs today on The World at about 40 minutes past the hour.
