Hello everybody!

First of all, I think Argunet is a very useful tool for structuring complex debates and it is great that a community of user exists to help each other out!

Recently, I am encountering the problem of Argunet hanging up frequently (every 5-10 min). Each time it hangs up I have to restart my computer and then it works well again for a couple of minutes. I have checked the degree of capacity using of Argunet of the CPU and its quite high (around 20%), but I am wondering if there might be another explanation (and possibly a way to avoid the hanging up). The file I am working on consists roughly 200 arguments which are grouped into several boxes. Maybe the complexity of the map is already requiring more computing capacity (I have an intel core i5)?

Has anybody encountered the same problem? Do you have any suggestions of what I can do to reduce the likelihood of Argunet hanging up? I thought about parting the map into several smaller ones and later putting them together, but this would of course not be an ideal solution...

Your help would be very much appreciated!

Thank you very much and best regards,
Simon

Hey Simon,

sorry for the trouble with Argunet. I have no immediate idea what the problem is. Splitting the map into smaller ones is, of course, one idea to deal with it - probably no the best one... Could you perhaps send me the log-files. Perhaps I can figure out what the problem is. There are two log files. In your home-directory you should find a hidden directory ".argunet". From there I need the files ".argunet/.metadata/.log" und ".argunet/logs/argunet.log"

Best regards,
Basti

Hi Basti,

Thank you very much for your reply and your offer to help! Much appreciated.

Attached you can find the two files you asked for (in the metadata folder I only found the .lock file, did you mean this one?) Please let me know if you need any more information/files.

Best regards and thanks again!
Simon

I just saw that it didn´t upload the second file. It is now attached to this email.

Hey Simon,

unfortunately, there we no errors listed in the log-files. Could you perhaps try the following: Delete the mentioned log-files, use Argunet until it crashes & send me the log-file right after that. There might be really a “.log” file in the “.metadata”-dir and also a file named exactly in the other directory “argunet.log”.

Until then I can only guess what the problem is: perhaps it is really due to some lack-of-memory issue. That depends on the java you’re using. You can try:

  • to use another java-version (perhaps an update) or
  • to explicitly allow java to allocate more memory. To do that the latter:

Find the directory where argunet is installed. There you should find a file called “argunet.ini”. Open it with an editor of your choice and add the following lines at the end of the file:

-vmargs
-Xmx1024m

if that does not work you might even try to allow max heap size of 2GB by -Xmx2048m instead (you can find background information about that here)

Best regards,
Basti

Best,
Simon
