I'd like to compare my Thunderbird IMAP settings with anyone else using Thunderbird and AGS Mail Server.

I'm having all kinds of problems in Thunderbird with this mailbox. Here's some of them:
  • Deleted messages re-appear unless I run the Repair Folder function in Thunderbird each time
  • Running the Compact function in Thunderbird sometimes does nothing. The messages marked as Deleted are still there. Then I have to run the Repair Folder function or restart Thunderbird.
  • Once in awhile Junk mail tagged by SpamAssassin shows up for a flash then disappears (I can't find it in any folders) even though I don't have Rules to delete or move junk mail.
  • New mail over IMAP 993 SSL/TLS doesn't show up unless I restart Thunderbird. I don't get any connection error messages. But if I restart Thunderbird then I get all the new mail immediately over IMAP port 993, but not again until I restart Thunderbird again. This is also the same problem with Outlook and IMAP port 993 and the FairEmail app for Android on IMAP port 993. Interestingly, the BlueMail app for Android does not have this problem with port 993. BlueMail with IMAP port 993 works fine, but I'm trying to stop using BlueMail.
I think these are mostly maybe Thunderbird issues (except the last one). Although I don't have any problems with other mailboxes on other mail servers in Thunderbird.

Here are my Thunderbird Server Settings for my mailbox account in AGS Mail Server:

Do your Thunderbird settings look about the same?
Do you have those (2) checkboxes checked like I do?
_X_ Check for new messages at startup
_X_ Check for new messages every 10 minutes

Are those necessary? Isn't email pushed over IMAP so there's no need to check for messages?

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott,

I am not sure what Thunderbird "repair" function exactly does, but I would suggest to do the following:

Run Mail Server UI, select the user on users tab, then Mailbox.  On Mailbox viewer, right click Inbox (or any other folder you are having problems with), and do "Increment UIDValidity".

Incrementing UIDValidity will force Thunderbird to reset local mailbox, their internal folder, and re-download and re-index everything again.

See if it helps.

OK, sounds like that might be a good idea Archie. Because sometimes when Thunderbird gives me problems then Outlook says there is a problem with the UID or the UID changed or something when I try and open a message in Outlook.

I think the Thunderbird "Repair folder" function deletes the index file of the local sync folder on the PC and re-indexes, because right after I run the Repair folder function it goes straight into downloading and indexing all the IMAP messages in the mailbox.

Unfortunately that didn't help. I did as suggested, "Increment UIDValidity" on my mailbox/Inbox from Mail Server UI.

I closed Thunderbird and re-opened it. It got all the messages again. I marked a few messages for Delete and hit the "Compact" function in Thunderbird which tells the server to permanently delete the messages. Nothing happened. I hit the Repair folder function in Thunderbird and the messages marked for Delete for gone. This isn't good because I'm deleting spam and compacting (purging) the folder all day, and I shouldn't have to Repair the folder every time.

I had this problem rarely when I had Mail Server 1.1.0.52 but now after upgrading to 1.2.9.1 it happens all the time. I wonder if something happened to my mailbox when I upgraded? Is there any other utilities to clean/rebuild/repair my mailbox?

I'm sending you an email link to a live screen-recording of this. 1 minute long.

Somehow I think this may be related to my problem with IMAP/993 that I asked about previously. It seems that Mail Server is not communicating all the time or loses communication with my mail client with updates to the mailbox. Maybe it stops updating the client for some reason? Just guessing.

I confirm, that it appears that IDLE command does not work properly with IMAP connections on port 993, which means, messages will be not pushed to server if connection is established on port 993.

I will be fixing it in the next release.  Meanwhile, it is advisable to use STARTLS with port 143.  It is as secure as connection on 993.

Thanks to Scott on pointing to the problem.
