Polish Rhetoric Society jointly with the Department of Rhetoric and Media at the Institute of Applied Polish Studies at the University of Warsaw are pleased to announce the annual conference Rhetoric of dispute which will be held on November 19-20 (Monday - Tuesday) 2012 in Warsaw.
The starting point for the deliberations proposed by the organizers is the understanding of rhetoric as a method and a tool for constructing and analyzing the dispute.
The dispute is set in the domain of rhetoric at all levels of discourse development: from the formulation of questions that raise controversy, the selection of topics, the line-up of arguments, to the figurative representation and articulation of the rhetorical situation in the space. We are interested in tools constructing the dispute and in different discursive communities participating in it.
We are interested in the art of rhetoric as a system of staging the dispute, but also as the art of reaching motivated rationale and improving the arguments in the discussion. We are interested in actors taking part in a dispute (ethos), its audience (pathos), and a network of arguments that build a persuasive message (logos).
We invite submissions on the following topics:
1. The dispute in the public space (political, ideological, scientific, philosophical, expert)
2. The debate as a rhetorical genre (parliamentary, pre-election, on television, in competitions)
3. Eristic dialectics of Schopenhauer
4. Rhetoric and eristic - methods, objectives, tools
5. Ritualization of the dispute in the media
6. Emotions in the dispute - figurative form of discourse
7. The argument in the dispute (strategies and tactics, forms of arguments: fallacies, types of arguments)
8. Legal rhetoric in litigation
9. The rhetoric of negotiations (the specificity of the dispute in the negotiation and mediation)
10. Rhetorical anthropology – homo rhetoricus and homo seriosus and their attitude towards the dispute.
11. Actio – non-verbal methods of persuasion in the dispute
The proposal should highlight the rhetorical nature of the problem, determine the definition of rhetoric and a research method. Abstracts are accepted only through an on-line form.
