Thank you for your inquiry about bringing dulce de leche and yerba mate to Australia as part of your personal luggage.
Dulce de leche products can be imported if they meet the following import conditions: The product is:
· Shelf stable
· Commercially prepared and packaged
· Imported in an amount up to 1 kilogram or 1 litre
· For the personal consumption of the person wishing to import it
· Not otherwise prohibited by a notice on the Department of Agriculture website.
Yerba mate is permitted entry to Australia pending the product meets the following import conditions:
· An Import Permit is not required.
· All material in the consignment must be labelled with full botanical names i.e. genus and species. Each package must be labelled. Alternatively if the goods are easily identifiable, then there is no requirement of the botanical nomenclature.
· All material in the consignment must be thoroughly dried and not capable of propagation.
· Each consignment will be subject to an inspection to verify that it is free of prohibited seeds, bark, live insects, soil and other quarantine risk material.
· If the consignment does not meet the above conditions it will be treated as detailed, re-exported or destroyed.
Once passengers arrive in Australia, they are required to complete an Incoming Passenger Card (IPC). On the IPC, they must declare all items that are covered on the card (e.g. meat, dairy, grains, medicines, wooden articles) - these items are only examples illustrating the types of items that must be declared under each category. These items must be declared on the IPC for the purpose of inspection by a Department of Agriculture Inspector.
After passengers have collected their luggage, they will be directed to a Department of Agriculture Officer who will inspect any declared items and inspect and/or x-ray any remaining luggage before they depart the international arrivals area.
For further information on what goods can or cannot be brought into Australia, you may visit our website at www.daff.gov.au or our Import Conditions database (ICON) at www.daff.gov.au/icon. This database lists the conditions under which various commodities may be brought into Australia. Using the ICON search facility, enter the item into the ‘Commodity’ field, insert the country of manufacture or origin in the ‘From country’ field and leave ‘All End Uses’ in the ‘For end-use’ field. Then, click "search" and the database will return the results. If a Department of Agriculture Import Permit is required, or if any other specific conditions apply, ICON will specify this.
The information available on ICON is the same information that the Department of Agriculture’s clearing officers use when inspecting and clearing goods arriving into the country. I recommend that you refer to this database regularly to keep up to date with any import condition changes by the Department of Agriculture.
We’re looking into finding out how people know to contact the Department of Agriculture about biosecurity/quarantine requirements. It would be appreciated if you could please let me know how you knew to contact us with your query (e.g. you searched the internet, family/friends told you, you’ve contacted us before, you’ve seen one of our brochures, you’ve seen the Border Security TV program played in Australia and overseas).
I hope this is of assistance to you. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Regards
Ivanna
