The UPSC Mains Optional Papers, also known as the Optional Subject Papers, are an integral part of the Mains Examination. Candidates are required to choose one optional subject from a list of approximately 48 subjects. They need to appear for two papers (Paper I and Paper II) for their chosen optional subject. Each optional subject paper is marked out of 250 marks, making a total of 500 marks for both optional papers. Each paper is conducted over three hours.
The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is a national competitive examination in India conducted by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment to higher Civil Services of the Government of India, including the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, and Indian Police Service. It is also colloquially referred to as the UPSC examination, and UPSC CSE. [4] and is conducted in three phases: a preliminary examination consisting of two objective-type papers (Paper I consisting of General Studies and Paper II, referred to as the Civil Service Aptitude Test or CSAT), and a main examination consisting of nine papers of conventional (essay) type, in which two papers are qualifying and only marks of seven are counted; finally followed by a personality test (interview).[4][5] A successful candidate sits for 32 hours of examination during the complete process spanning around one year.
Appearing to attempt one of the papers in the preliminary examination is counted as an attempt, including disqualification/ cancellation of candidature. However, applying to sit the exam but failing to attend is not counted as an attempt.[14]
From 2011 onwards, the preliminary examination intends to focus on analytical abilities and understanding rather than the ability to memorize. The new pattern includes two papers of two hours duration and 200 marks each.[16] Both papers have multiple-choice objective type questions only.[16] They are as follows:
The Civil Services Main written examination consists of nine papers, two qualifying and seven ranking in nature. Candidates who pass qualifying papers are ranked according to marks and a selected number of candidates are called for an interview or a personality test at the Commission's discretion.

1. The Civil Services Examination consists of a Preliminary Examination which is an eliminatory and objective type multiple choice test with two compulsory papers. Those who qualify in this Preliminary screening test can appear for the Main Examination. Marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination is not counted for final selection and ranking of a candidate.
2. The Main Examination is a descriptive type of test having compulsory and elective subjects. It includes Essay, General Studies, English Language, one Indian Language and two elective subjects. Those who get the minimum qualifying marks in the Main Examination are called for an Interview/Personality test. English language and Indian language under compulsory category are qualifying type and the marks scored in these papers are not included for final ranking.
The second stage, called the Mains, is a written exam of nine papers, each of two-hour duration. Of these, two are qualifying papers (English and an Indian language) and test basic language competence. The other seven are an essay paper, four General Studies papers, and two optional subjects. In the essay, candidates have to write two articles of 1000 words each on topical issues like the economy, human resource development, security, or philosophical themes, abstract ideas and quotes.
The UPSC IAS Preliminary Exam is the first stage. There are two objective-type publications in total. The Aptitude Test, often known as the CSAT, is the first. There will be a maximum of 80 questions. This paper is worth 200 points and is only for qualifying purposes. The second piece of writing is only for General Studies. This is a performance examination with 100 questions. The maximum possible score is 200. Both of these papers are required for all candidates. Each of these presentations will be two hours long. Candidates who pass this stage will advance to the following step, the UPSC IAS Mains Examination.
This UPSC IAS Mains Examination is the second stage. There are nine descriptive papers at this stage. Two of the nine papers are qualified in nature. The language papers are as follows: English and a mandatory Indian language. The remaining seven papers consist of four General Studies papers, two option papers, and one Essay. Each of these seven papers is worth 250 points. Candidates who pass the Mains examination will be invited to an interview.
