Aégis is the third studio album by Norwegian gothic metal band Theatre of Tragedy, and the last album of their musical period defined by gothic stylings and Early Modern English lyrics.

As with Theatre of Tragedy's previous albums, the lyrics are written in Early Modern English (except "Venus", in Latin) which sounds very different from modern English: Vaunt! - Devil tyne - Wadst thou wane fore'ermae? (from the song "Angélique"). The subject matter is drawn from a range of European folklore and history: Venus and Poppæa are from Roman sources; Aœde, Cassandra, Bacchante and Siren are drawn from Greek mythology; while Lorelei refers to a Nix from German stories, and Angélique is inspired by medieval poem Orlando Furioso.

The third album by the gothic doom pioneers is now reissued as a deluxe gatefold edition on 180-GRAM VINYL with the addition of four bonus tracks. A 12-page booklet is also included. 'Aegis' was originally released in 1998.

Vocalist Liv Kristine Espenæs Krull was with Theatre Of Tragedy from the beginning, and she evolved with the band through the years. I spoke with Liv, and let her know that my favourite Theatre Of Tragedy album was 1996's Velvet Darkness They Fear. Interestingly, it was Liv's favourite as well. "Thank you for your compliment!" she said.

Titled Lovelorn, the band's debut album was much more personal, emotional, and intense. Liv describes the sound on the album as follows: "Bombastic, emotional, both heavy and melodic. It builds up on contrasts and feelings. The sound, the lyrics, the concept - everything is strongly connected to each other."
