UTRGV is one of 22 colleges and universities across the country that will have an USDA AgDiscovery program. The program is a summer outreach program designed to help teenagers explore careers in plant and animal science, wildlife management, agribusiness, and much more! It is a unique opportunity for students to gain a first-hand look at the many career paths open to them in the agricultural sciences.
The program will run from June 11-23, 2023 and the deadline for students to apply is March 31, 2023.

USDA Animal Plant Health and Inspection Service is now accepting applications for their AgDiscovery Program. AgDiscovery is a summer outreach program designed to help teenagers explore careers in plant and animal science, wildlife management, agribusiness, and much more! It is a unique opportunity for students to gain a first-hand look at the many career paths open to them in the agricultural sciences. The program allows students to live on a college campus and learn about agriculture from university professors, scientists, and administrative professionals who work for the U.S. Government in a variety of fields.
This year, 22 colleges universities across the country participating. I am excited to share that University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is one of this year’s locations! The program at UTRGV will be June 11-23, 2023 and is open to students in high school (Grades 9-11). This 2-week program will allow students to explore careers in plant and soil sciences, food inspection and distribution, natural resources, and wildlife biology. Every student will gain valuable hands-on experiences working with professionals on the farm, in the laboratory, and in wildlife environments. A variety of unique learning activities will focus on agronomy, entomology, plant pathology, soil ecology, organic farming, forestry, habitat restoration, and pest management. Students will live on the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) campus in Edinburg and travel to exciting destinations throughout the Rio Grande Valley, including government and university laboratories, conventional and organic farms, agricultural inspection stations, South Padre Island National Seashore, and several National Wildlife Refuges.
There is no cost to attend the AgDiscovery 2023 summer program. Tuition, room and board, lab supplies, meals, and activity fees will be covered by APHIS. Students selected for the program are only responsible for costs that may be associated with traveling to the university campus on opening day and returning home at the conclusion of the program on closing day.
