Arduino Uno

Hi guys,
I came across the latest release - arduino uno. I have a few queries on that. They quote the following on their webpage:
"The Uno differs from all preceding boards in that it does not use the FTDI USB-to-serial driver chip. Instead, it features the Atmega8U2 programmed as a USB-to-serial converter. "
Now why is this better? I am not able to understand this.

Is it the absence of a separate USB-SERIAL driver?

One more question. Shields of the duemilanove board will be compatible with UNO?

It has the same pin configuration and micro-controller, so I guess it should work :).

hi all,

sorry was busy to get back !

yes all shields r compatible, the only thing that is changed is the
way the serial to usb conversion is handled !
