Interested in using your coding skills to 'liberate' public data so that citizens and journalists can use it to hold officials accountable?

Leading international open data activist and data journalism trainer, +Friedrich Lindenberg, will speak at a DataLiberation meetup at Google's new+Umbono  technology lab in Woodstock on Friday evening. Lindenberg is the team leader on the Open Knowledge Foundation's Berlin-based www.OpenSpending.org initiative to lift the veil on public finances, and is also the author of Adhocracy, a collaborative drafting software used by the Internet commission of the German Bundestag and several political parties to enable citizens to contribute to policy documents.

The meetup is hosted by the Cape Town chapter of www.HacksHackers.com, between 6pm and 8pm on September 14 (Friday)
.

www.AfricanNewsChallenge.org manager, +Justin Arenstein, will also be at the meeting to chat about the 40 projects that have just been shortlisted for $1m in seed funding. The +African News Innovation Challenge finalists include a number of journalist-led projects from Cape Town, including a HacksHackers proposal to establish ScrakerWiki helpdesk in the city to help journalists improve their investigative and analytical reporting.

There will be snacks & drinks & networking afterwards. If you plan to attend, please sign-up on the gForm on the link below & give us a bit more info about yourself so that we know who'll be in the room. The sign-up form can be found at: http://bit.ly/Qdjkpo

Cheers,
Justin

Justin,

This sounds great. Unfortunately I cannot make this evening as I have an exhibition opening.

Can I pass this on to the members on the FB Group?

Best,

Yes, plse, do pass it along.

If we get a good turnout, I'll be able to bring in international speakers once per month.

Cheers,
Justin

Seriously Justin? That's incentive to bring along a throng, I'm alerting the smart masses.
Best of luck with your exhibition Robyn.

Sounds awesome! Pity, I only came across this now. Would have love to push this through the Cape Town Design Network Mailer.

By the way: We just started IxDA Cape Town, the local chapter of IxDA.org, the global Interaction Design Association. We will have a little get-together with introductory talks to launch the group officially on September 21st 2012 from 5-6pm at The Bank, 71 Harrington Street.

You can sign up with IxDA Cape Town here: http://interactiondesign.co.za

All the best

Michael

Michael,

Plse do push it thru the CT.Design Network lists. UI/UX creatives are essential for any of these civic engagement / open data initiatives, but are often overlooked.

We're also looking at cohosting a Design4Democracy hackathon next month or in early November, to build on the success of the Code4Democracy event in August.

The HH meetup might be a good opportunity for folk to start connecting across sectors.

Cheers,
Justin
