Russia reinforces Arctic air defense with TorM2DT gun missile system

Russia transforms the organizational structure of Arctic forces, implements large-scale infrastructure projects, and designs new arms and hardware adapted to the Arctic climate. The Almaz-Antey company has designed the Arctic option of Tor-M2 antiaircraft missile gun — Tor-M2DT, the Military-Industrial Courier writes.

Tor-M2DT is produced by Kupol Electromechanical Plant in Izhevsk (IEMZ) of Almaz-Antey. The missile-gun armament ensures effective air defense of army units, strategic military, government, and infrastructure objects in extreme climates. Tor-M2DT is intended to destroy precision weapons, including guided, cruise and antiradar missiles, smart and gliding air bombs, airplanes, helicopters and drones. It destroys them in the operational radius regardless of the time of the day, weather and disturbances in conditions of intensive radio, optical, electronic, and fire impact.
The Arctic option of Tor was for the first time displayed in 2017 when Tor-M2DT participated in the V-Day parade in Red Square. Eighteen months later the Defense Ministry received the first twelve launchers on tracked two-section DT-30PM undercarriage. They were delivered to the Northern fleet. Two months later the operators of the motorized rifle brigade of the fleet began training in the air defense center in Yeisk and practiced live fire at a range in Astrakhan region. In July 2019, Tor-M2DT for the first time fired in the Arctic in Novaya Zemlya Archipelago.
The Arctic Tor uses cold-resistant fuel and lubricants that allow operating at minus 50 degrees Centigrade. The two-section floating DT-30PM transporter is the only all-terrain vehicle in the world that can drive in the Arctic, cross dangerous cracks and icepacks, and forge water obstacles.
The gun can simultaneously fire at four air targets attacking from various directions. Its computer classifies the targets, estimates the minimal fly-in time and the level of danger. Tor-M2DT operator decides to open fire according to the supplied information. 9M338 antiaircraft guided missile independently calculates the explosion time to guarantee target destruction with fragmentation.
Tor-M2DT can be operated manually and automatically. In the latter case, it controls the airspace and independently decides to destroy a target that was not identified by the friend-of-foe system.
Tracked DT-30PM transporter has two sections: the front one carries a life-support module for the crew and the back one accommodates controls, antennas and launchers. The producer created optimal conditions for the crew to operate even in abnormal Arctic cold. The combat and technical potential of DT-30PM was demonstrated during a march from Tiksi to Kotelny Island along icepacks, cracks and open water of the Arctic Ocean.
