I've made a Google spreadsheet, in which I lay out what I've learned
about happiness and taxes. You can see it at this link:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p7Ll4UApAwVvPVPVuTPTTew

Please note your population's anger about taxes has no meaning other
than the anger's relationship to total happiness. I.e., the
population's anger is quantified and subtracted from your total
happiness.

Think of it this way: If you have gems, silver, and spices, you're
increasing your happiness by 2.5, 2, 2, respectively, a total of 6.5.
This example is from Tovarischia. Thus, even at 28 percent taxes, I
am "lowering" my default happiness (i.e., happiness level status minus
happiness bonuses from commodities) by seven points. But factoring in
the commodity bonuses, my happiness level is otherwise only 0.5 lower
than the default level. My population could love me (twenty happiness
points) or it can adore me (thirteen happiness points).

Personally, I'm fine with adoration as I earn 32 percent higher tax
income at adoration as I would from love.
