It is okay to install Mapbook in a different folder, for example I use
C:\ESRI\ArcGIS_Addons. This is the first time I've heard of a button
actually missing from the toolbar. A more common complaint is that the
toolbar itself is not found. You might try the the Manual Registraton
Procedure recipe, http://code.google.com/p/arcmapbook/wiki/InstallOn64bit.
To the best of my knowledge the student version should be the same as
the normal one with regards to Mapbook, but I've never used the student
version of ArcMap so I really don't know.

Thanks for responding so quickly, Matt. Actually, I found another posted incidence of the missing button on the google group forum that addresses Map Book. I don't have 64 bit, so that wasn't the problem. But here's what I did, oh yes, so remedial as to be embarassing.
I had first opened an empty ArcMap and added the Map Series toolbar which is when I found the missing button. But I then opened a map I had made previously that had feature classes (layers) already added, and, presto!, the button was there. Simple, too, too, simple.

The manual registration procedure works for any version, not just 64bit.
It happens to be on the install 64bit page because it seems that those
are the systems that most often have to use it.

I'm glad you found a solution. Now that you've restored the button once
by opening an old map composition, is the Create/Update Grid button
still there when you open a new empty map?
