Hi all-
First- I'm really psyched about everyone's enthusiasm and participation in the forming of this group so far- it's been really fun. It seems that we have all identified some areas where we need to focus our energies in order to get things up and running, and make the biggest impact possible. It's come to my (and others') attention that perhaps we need a better mechanism for active participants (and specifically moderators) to organize ourselves (and our time) towards getting the community going. To this end, I've created a Basecamp project (online project management system) to see if it might be of any use to us. I've signed up for a free project (as there are costly packages too!), which allows us to create 'to-do lists', message boards, writeboards, and most importantly the ability to assign tasks to people as well as allows others to comment/message about specific tasks or aspects of the project.
I think if we choose to go down this route, we should be clear about what we are using it for- specifically for group moderators (and active participants) to manage the tasks related to the start up of the SIG. I think we should maintain the Google Group for wider discussions and announcements with the (hopefully!) growing community, and facilitate an open record of the process of creating our SIG. The Basecamp project would theoretically only be for start up tasks, though we could let it lie dormant until we need it in the future- this could be useful for coordinating a funding application, organizing a workshop, or creating a CMS, for instance.
I'd appreciate any feedback you guys have on this asap. I've created the test Basecamp and entered in lots of to-do lists (along with Christine Markussen and John Pouncett- whom I've been floating the idea with!) and writeboards for comment. You need an email invite, so those particularly interested in being involved with this aspect please send me an email (off list if you want) and I will send the invite along. I will probably assume those of you who have been active over the last couple days want an invite, thus you should expect an invite whether you like it or not! :) You should then be invited to create a login and password, giving you access to the project management site.
This is certainly not a done-deal- so please feel free to shoot Basecamp down at any point. I'm all ears for suggestions- it just seems like these things tend to fall by the wayside when folks aren't held accountable for their tasks (and time), even if it is through a silly online form!
Cheers,
Jess
