After installing onto /dev/sda4 I can boot but it doesn't create the root /dev/sda4 node and dumps to recov shell

Okay so after the battle of making the live cd install arch onto the powerbook g4 I was able to boot but somehow the /dev/sda nodes aren't created thus leaving me no access to my root partition. I'm thinking I am missing mkinitcpio modules or hooks, but which? I tried adding pata_macio and libata to no avail. I am rebuilding the initramfs under a chroot, but that shouldn't matter.
