Unable to mount shared directory

Every time I try and mount a shared directory with the mount -t
vboxsf -o rw,exec,uid=1000,gid=1000 sendSIP /home/demo/1-receiveSIP
command receive the error: /sbin/mount.vboxsf: mounting failed with
the error: No such file or directory

I've added my shared directory under devices/shared folders and the
mount.vboxsf file is in the the /sbin directory. I'm using the
VirtualBox install. Any ideas?

I see those instructions are slightly outdated.
I've updated the wiki; please revisit:
http://archivematica.org/wiki/index.php?title=Virtual_appliance_instructions#Import_files_into_virtual_appliance_.28optional.29

Note: With these instructions you'll need to move the SIPs from within
the shared directory, to the receive SIP directory.
You can use the SIP creation tools, (right click scripts) in the vm,
to structure these SIPs for compliance.

I should mention after I emailed the list yesterday that I did create
a new directory on archivematica, and using the updatedex
documentation I'm getting the same error as then: mounting failed with
the error: No such device.

No such device sounds like a different error than "No such file or
directory."
I personally haven't used virtual box much myself, so I'm going to
download and test.
As I recall, there may be an addition that is required to be installed
into the guest OS.
Last time I looked, I think virtual box had them installed by a cd
iso; downloadable through the devices menu.

I'm getting the same error when trying to mount the sendSIP directory. I've set up the shared folder in Virtual Box (http://archivematica.org/wiki/index.php?title=Virtual_appliance_instructions, Step 2) and created the "shared" folder on the VB desktop. But when I try to mount the folder I get the following:

"/sbin/mount.vboxsf: mounting failed with the error: No such device"

You also need to install "Guest Additions" which I did. When I check
my VirtualBox install it says I have 1 shared folder, but it won't let
me mount into the archivematica space.

I suspect these problems may be related to how the repositories are
setup for archivematica.

I tried with a blank xubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) install, and had the same
results, so this isn't strictly an archivematica problem.
I'm looking into downloading/specifying the source of the kernel.

I've spent all of yesterday, and most of today working on this, and
I've had some success.

Yesterday I was experimenting with various fixes; first I tried
installing virtualbox-guest-additions from the ubuntu repository,
without success; then tried updating(sudo aptitude upgrade), then
backports, then downloading the lucid kernel source by git. Still
wasn't working. On a whim, I tried installing from the cd again. This
time it entered a setting up in non kernel mode, when the kernel mode
install failed. After that, I was able to mount the directory, however
part of the gui was no longer appearing - Applications, Places, and
the bar along the bottom.

Today I tried to recreate the success without the failed GUI. I
started with the downloaded Archivematica 0.7alpha virtualbox image,
and repeated the above steps, without the update, and without the
backports. It appears successful. I need to export the image, compress
it, and upload it, for it to be available for download, as
Archivematica-0.7alpha-r2.tbz. It should be available for download
Monday.

I'd recommend downloading the r2 image, over trying to fix the present
one.

I downloaded the patched version of the VirtualBox install, but when I
try to run it in the Virtual Environment I get the following error:

Malformed host interface networking name 'ethO' (VERR_INTERNAL_ERROR)

I'm home sick today, so I don't have virtualbox access at the moment,
but I suspect I forgot to change the networking back to NAT from
bridged, after I had finished copying some files to the vm from our
network. You may be able to change that in the VM settings after
importing it. (Right click the vm, settings, networking tab)

I'm going to hold off on updating the download wiki link till this is
resolved.
