Good afternoon,

I participate in a concurrent disorders workgroup at a
large mental health hospital which is working toward
developing more capable policies and approaches. Your
experiences using positive contingencies for meeting
substance use goals and for attendance in programming
would be most helpful particularly if you have evidence of
the efficaciousness of the interventions.

Thank you,
Allison

Hello Allison,
I would recommend client-centered interventions including
motivational interviewing and stages of change for client
engagement, retention and behavior change.
Free teaching and training videos (5 clips) that teach
motivational
interviewing in psychiatry - mental health are available
at:
https://www.youtube.com/user/expand17
This link also includes 6 video clips that teach
motivational
interviewing in primary health care.
Each of these clips include skills, strategies, techniques
and examples
of these approaches and communication style. They are
evidence-based.
From a group treatment perspective you may find the
following articles/chapters to be useful in developing
interactive, collaborative
group treatment that is also client-centered.
At this link:
http://www.scribd.com/Kathleen_Sciacca/documents
you will find the following literature:
"Integrated group treatment for people experiencing mental
healthsubstance use problems"
"Dual Diagnosis Treatment and Motivational Interviewing
for Co-occurring Disorders"
"Removing Barriers: Dual Diagnosis Treatment and
Motivational Interviewing."
There are a number of other pertinent pieces at this link.
A recent article in Behavioral Health Care magazine is at:
http://www.behavioral.net/print/article/language-integrated-care
I hope you and your work group will find these resources
useful in
developing policies and approaches.
