We give out sodas (diet and regular) to group attendees. We have found this
helpful in getting people to come to groups who otherwsie wouldn't be
motivated to do so at first.
Also, there is a fair amount of research done in the area of contingency
management for substance abusers...

I participate in a concurrent disorders workgroup at a
large mental health hospital which is working toward
developing more capable policies and approaches. Your
experiences using positive contingencies for meeting
substance use goals and for attendance in programming
would be most helpful particularly if you have evidence of
the efficaciousness of the interventions.

A small women's recovery group I ran had a bouquet of flowers on the
table during the group. At the end of the session, each participant took
a single flower home. The gesture appeared as important as the
metaphor. That group had 100% attending for 10 weeks in winter.
