Hi Team,

I came here looking for the discussions that had happened around the Kiwiburn 2022 population to understand the board's reasoning for the this years population cap but I notice that this group is not used very much anymore.

I assume you guys are talking elsewhere and wonder if you are aware of this rule?

Can I request that all conversations around the Kiwiburn 2022 population be made public as soon as practicable. I'm keen to get more community discussion going on this subject for the 2023 event.

Cheers,
Tim.

Thanks Shelley.

I can't see much in there about population size but I only had a brief look at it.

But what I'm referring to is the full content of the actual conversations. The rules are pretty clear that all the conversations from "internet meetings" which are laid out in 6.0(2) of the rules and would include any email list being used for making decisions.

I only know this because I remember all the debate back when I was on the board and the idea was to keep the board as transparent as possible and avoid an "us and them" situation that exists between the community the BMORG. I think we made a public decision that discussions that were commercial sensitivity or where privacy would otherwise be breached were allowed to be made private for obvious reasons but the bulk of discussions were to happen in the open to increase transparency.

Maybe this has been lost to the sands of time?

Cheers,
Tim.

Hi Team,

As per my thread on the Kiwiburn Facebook page I'd like to discuss this at the AGM tomorrow night, could this please be added to the agenda?

Cheers,
Tim.

Hi Tim,

Just cross-posting my email response here so we can loop in anybody else in the community who is interested on this :-)

I've been doing some digging over the past month, and been having chats with a few people who have raised similar concerns . In fact, our regional BM contact spoke at length with all of us at the last ExCom monthly meeting, and we realized there might be a less resource-intensive set of solutions.

What we've elected to do, instead, is as follows:
  1. Resurrect the old public Google Groups method, for now, until we find a solution that has better functionality for the community.
  2. More detailed minutes, which will also be available shortly as a pinned thread on the public Google Groups
  3. Start up Fireside chats as yet another avenue for the community to directly engage with both ExCom and any year-round volunteers (e.g. during the last Fireside chat, we had Conduct Committee lead the meeting)
We think the approaches above have a number of advantages:
  • It's not another tool and process for ExCom to adopt, and reduces the need to ask other people to commit their time and effort to maintain these processes
  • It allows those interested to read through what we're working on without having to wait for the monthly minutes
  • It addresses some of the other transparency concerns raised via Facebook recently
That said, we really appreciate your time and effort in planning out and being willing to do the mahi for an alternative solution. And once again, very sorry that your OG email went unanswered for so long. Hope this helps!

Kind regards,
Rads
Kiwiburn ExCom Secretary

Hi Team,

That's great news! It will be great to see this old beast come back to life.

Whilst I commend your efforts here it also must be raised that there is a significant gap in Kiwiburn's transparency record which still needs to be addressed.

It was out-of-band that I made my suggestions in dealing with Kiwiburn's transparency issues so for reference I was suggesting a KB "official information" role as something to fill the transparency gap without having to change any of the current systems. Effectively giving someone access to all past discussions and then having the ability for the community to ask for all information on x topic and have that person gather the relevant data.

As per this thread I first raised the issue nearly 2 years ago so there is well over 2 years of missing data.

So in the ExCom's discussion what was proposed as a solution to missing the mark with transparency in the intervening period?

Thanks for all the hard work, I know you all have your hearts in the right place.

Regards,
Tim.
