I hope everyone is having a good week so far. Jo's asked me to provide a wee introduction, but please let me know if there's anything else you'd like to know that I've left out.
I attended my first Kiwiburn 2 years ago. We set up our theme camp based on providing a space for connecting in meaningful conversation ('the connection section') - which we plan to do again this upcoming year. However, I've been a part of progressive, alternative, or activist communities for my entire adult life so have flitted around the edges of the Burner community for the past 15 years. I'm interested in joining the conduct committee because I believe that a progressive community such as Kiwiburn should be well-resourced with a myriad of ways to respond to harm within its community that meet the needs of all those impacted, and I feel compelled to offer any of my skills in this area that may be of use to support this.
I grew up in the States, and moved to New Zealand nearly 5 years ago. I'm a trained lawyer, but work exclusively in restorative justice and restorative practices. I facilitate cases resulting from all sorts of incidents of crime or conflict across a wide range of issues and sectors, and I also teach others how to facilitate restorative processes and implement restorative approaches in their own communities. I am primarily based out of Victoria University, and respond to both student and staff misconduct and conflict. Regular issues I work with range from flatmate conflict and workplace disputes to sexual assault and other more severe crime and harm within the criminal justice system through Community Law. I have a bachelor's degree in Psychology, a certificate in Peace and Conflict Studies, a Juris Doctorate (Law), and am a trained yoga instructor and life coach, but primary skill I bring is the belief that everyone is capable and responsible for repairing the harm that they cause; and those who have experienced harm must be central to the decision-making regarding how it is repaired. For those responsible individuals who are incapable of or unwilling to repair that harm, I think the community has an obligation to put boundaries in place to prevent it from reoccurring. It's my understanding that the conduct committee's responsibility is to uphold this community standard, and I'd be happy to help support that standard however is most helpful.
I'm certainly happy to answer any questions you have and am looking forward to meeting you all in due course.
