i think our end of year financials show that we are now in a position to start funding theme camps. i think this should include travel, as over the last couple of years there has been quite a drop in south island burners, and i think being able to offer them some financial assistant to get to the paddock would make a massive difference to people being able to come. that ferry isn't cheap, and neither is petrol and sadly this keeps a lot of colourful people with some awesome art away from the paddock. i think this would also help bring more art to the paddock, as people have cool ideas that tie into their theme camp and it would be cool to see these expanded on. i've also heard that KAC plans to relax its rules regarding art related to theme camps getting funded, so i think this is a good chance to encourage heaps more art an cool stuff
i'm not quite sure how best to run this. expand the theme camp team and give Anne some help? expand the KAC? make it part of town planning?
depending on the budget i think it would be good to put between $6000-$10000 towards this

This year and every second year we have a tight date clash with Luminate festival in the upper South Island reducing the numbers of our South Islanders, especially those creating theme camps etc

I like the idea of more support to theme camps but believe it would have to be well managed to prevent it looking like just favouring some 'mates' from Christchurch, or where ever ?

In an art grant application you have to justify what you want and what KB get as part of KB getting 'bang for their buck', how would you see this working ?

you are suggesting an amount equal to what we give out in Art Grants to participants to create stuff ?

KAC already allow for art related to theme camps "We may fund art cars, mobile art, and art created by theme camps, based on individual merits, public interactivity and artistic relevance."

While we are talking KAC perhaps we should encourage KAC to also consider opening up what is covered by them as an expense they will reimburse, currently they only pay for materials but not for transport, this transport cost could be from the South Island or anywhere else in the world

I like this idea and it will keep access to funding an application process.

I don't recall this ever being discussed before? If it's an increase in money being allocated to KAC and a changing of their criteria, I would be tentatively not opposed to it. I think there's better things we can be doing to increase the art we're supporting on the paddock. I'm thinking more bigger art grants. Apparently there's a reasonable number of people who get given grants every year who don't end up following through/collecting their grant money - it'd be nice to see what more we could be doing to support artists/helping them follow through on their work.

We should definitely be looking at allowing KAC to fund transport for art works.

Theme camps though? I'm not entirely sure that I'm on board with this idea.

was this not discussed at the summit? i've had a couple discussions with diff people about it and at first i didn't like the idea of it either but it has since grown on me. art on the paddock has been dropping off over the last couple of years, with lots of people cancelling and not following through with their art grants. theme camps bring with them their own art, in decorations etc, and people want to make fun things to enjoy at their theme camps where they hang out with all their mates. one of the problems with big art is people want to burn it as we are not a festival of multi millionaires with massive storage space to house everything afterwards. this brings with it more work for ops and the firefighters which is not ideal, and personally i found having 4 burns quite boring. BS massively funds their theme camps and from what i've heard this works really well. obviously we would have criteria and expectations for any funding and arn't just going to give chur heaps of money for new speakers. but i think the idea is a good one, and i would like to see us at least giving it a go for a year or two and seeing what it brings to the paddock. i also don't see why this can't go hand in hand with more money for (bigger) art, supporting artist to follow through with work and a change in KACs funding criteria

This was discussed at summit in terms of funding transport for art/trailers/inter island ferry. There are minutes on this.

Not sure if theme camp grants were discussed?

KAC have recently changed our rules to allow theme camps to have art within the camp itself - it previously had a requirement that art be at least 20m from a camp. I feel this is quite different from funding theme camps themselves and the other burns do allocate funds to theme camps ( I'm not sure what their systems are- but it is separate to art grants) I feel like the two things are quite separate entities and its best to keep it that way if we want to maintain and encourage separate art pieces instead of art grants money all going to theme camp decor ( we've left it to our discretion to decide which applications will fit this bill and which wont).

However, having seen what theme camps can do with a little funding at Burning Seed if at all possible I think KB should consider funding them.

On the note of helping promote art on the paddock and art grants- we are definitely open to suggestions! One of the problems we always have is not enough(quality) applications and people pulling out of grants - money which we reallocated to other artists where possible this year to support larger grants. One of the main issues is people don't know about grants, which we are trying to fix but need all the help we can get here! We have relaxed our rules a bit about transport and if large grants need transportation funding we grant that ( especially international art as that is a major cost).

we need a media push soon to explain these new rules and help encourage art, I will be pushing for people to collaborate and build art at the couple of hands on workshops I will be running in Auckland over the next month or two.

We will also have the Auckland Burner space operating as a shared facility by then so I am keen for lots of cool shit to happen

Well said Rohana. I'd agree with a separate grant system for theme camps.

Where's our Theme Camp lead? :D
