Hello ExCom!

Ryan has made an official application for the role of the Site Safety Facilitator on the Kiwiburn ExCom. Please see Ryan's application below:

I do have a background in professional health and safety. I spent 3 years as health and safety manager for Jamon Construction and Civil, a company that undertook over 60% of the residential demolitions in Christchurch following the 2010/2011 earthquakes. In this role I handled submissions of demolition methodologies for complex and difficult demolitions (various geotechnical risk factors as well as asbestos or other contaminated sites and larger commercial projects) as well as general H&S management of the 16 demolition crews we had operating simultaneously (site inspections, documentation checks ), often in the spotlight of the national media.

It has been a few years since I have worked in the H&S field, since I followed my preferred career path of brewing craft beer. That being said, I would be more than happy to offer up my services in order to help facilitate Kiwiburn. Primarily, I'm interested in the role because I understand it is one that needs filling and I am keen to continue increasing my contribution, so this seems like a way I can do that!

Specifically, the skills I would bring are:

- An analytical mind and good eye for documentation
- An understanding of the h&S legislation
- People and communication skills
- An understanding of hazard and risk assessment
- Practical and pragmatic engagement with feedback for people undertaking work as to how to improve/consider safety aspects of their work

I'd be keen to get a bit more insight as to the extent of the role, and would be happy as to talk more about how I can help.

Let me know if there is anything else you would like to know!

Ngā mihi,

Ryan

Many thanks for putting your hand up for this one Ryan! We appreciate it.

We will allow one week from today for the ExCom to ask Ryan's questions before raising his submission to a vote.

Hey Ryan! I'll start.

Site Safety Facilitator is an Executive Committee (ExCom) role. Not only is this role to be the key coordinator for all Site Safety team leads, but as an ExCom position you would need to attend monthly Google Hangout meetings, and be able to respond to emails promptly (within 2-3 days ideally) throughout the year. Are you able to committee this sort energy to the role?

Additionally, as an ExCom role you would need to discuss sensitive information that would need to stay within ExCom and affected positions such as Site Managers. You may even encounter sensitive info that relates to a participant you personally know. How might you react in such an instance?

Kia ora e hoa,

Firstly I'd just like to say a big old ka pai to you awesome folk who have been putting in the mahi getting KB sussed for 2020 and following years, great work!

I am, as of November 1, finishing up my 3 day a week role as a brewer to be full time on running my own business. This transition to full-time in charge of my own scheduling will allow me to be available for monthly ExCom meetings, and to respond to emails promptly (I'll be the only boss looking over my shoulder!)

I have worked in roles where confidentiality is of high importance before, and am comfortable with holding information within a specific group. I feel as though I have good level of maturity when encountering sensitive information about people who I know. I am able to separate personal from professional (this role would sit under the 'professional' camp), and so my best to view things objectively, assessing facts and acknowledging biases where I am aware of them, in situations where this is required. In the specific instance where I encountered sensitive info about a participant I know on a personal level, I would firstly make the nature of my relationship to the person be known so as to inform others of my potential biases or perspectives. I would offer to sit out of discussions if I (or others) feel as though my prior relationship with the person would inhibit my capacity to contribute effectively to discussions. I would maintain confidentiality of information at all times, and otherwise do my best to respond and communicate regarding this information in a mature and effective manner.

Feel free to hit me with follow ups on that too,

Ngā mihi

Hi Ryan

Thanks for putting yourself forward and offering to commit your valuable time and skills.

Just one smallish query - if you have been out of a full time H&S role for a while are you maintaining knowledge of latest changes in legislation etc? I am assuming you are if running your own business.

FYI - as Kiwiburn is 100% volunteer run its responsibilities are currently slightly different as we are not deemed a normal PCBU.  Although we still strive to meet or exceed the HSWA requirements where it is practical for us to do so - which is where your skills will come into play..

Cheers
Andy

PS does this also mean we should consider creating a new position of Kiwiburn Master Brewer????

Kia ora Andy,

Regarding legislation, I was still in my H&S role as all of the legislative changes were being rolled out, so I was required to get my head round those at the time. I have been keeping up to date with the legislation onward from there also. And yes, running my own business has meant refreshing some of this knowledge too, which is helpful for this role! I'm also very confident in my abilities to research and upskill further in this area if I encounter aspects of H&S I haven't dealt with before (I recently did this for pressure boilers for my business - fascinating stuff!).

And yes, I picked up on that a couple of years back at the last KB where I helped Tania by reviewing the latest H&S plan. I like the intention to still behave as  PCBU regardless of legal requirement, as it aligns with the 'any action or inaction leading to harm' duties held by employees, employers, and everyone under the act.

Hope that answers the queries :)

And I'd happily apply to any master brewer position, although not sure I'm quite at 'master' level yet :)

Ngā mihi

Ryan

Kia ora all,

What are the next steps are from here regarding this application?

Is there some review underway, and what communication can be expected around this?  Is there some form of induction into the role if all is acceptable?

Ngā mihi nui,

Ryan
