Kia ora koutou. At this year's event I had the pleasure of meeting Doxie from Lakes of Fire in Michigan and we talked about the Burner exchange program, something that she is very passionate about. There's a lot that we do really well that we can share with other Burns, and there's a lot we can learn from others and incorporate into our processes, and it's also a great opportunity to build global community. With my roles and experience within Kiwiburn, and also the freedom and flexibility I have in my life, I'm a good candidate and I'd represent Kiwiburn well. And in all honesty, prior to this year's event I had been feeling quite burned out and like I had been giving way more to Kiwiburn than I had been getting back - though I did have a fabulous and cruisey time at this event so that helped a lot.

Doxie is keen to have me at their event in June this year so I can bring back my learnings and we can implement them for our next event. I will have flights, a ticket and all my camping gear provided, and I will be fed and hosted as part of the program. So I wanted to check in and see how you feel about this. Do you see the value in the Burner exchange program and would we be happy to reciprocate? Are you happy for me to be a representative for Kiwiburn in this way? Keen to hear your thoughts.

I think a burner exchange is an awesome idea and a great way for local communities to connect on a global scale as well as a skill sharing technique.
You are a great candidate Jo.

Just my 2 cents worth

Hey Jo! In what capacity were you thinking you’d exchange? (Doxie was a FAST team member).

You can draft up a budget funding request application using the KB template your KB account has access to, and submit this to ExCom. Being that we are now close to March I’d get this in ASAP for our Treasurer to consider in next financial years budget.

Thanks Lumos, hi Geveta! Just to clarify, Lakes of Fire would sponsor my trip there in June, and then the idea is Kiwiburn would sponsor a valued member of their team to come here in return. I would be going in my capacity as Conduct Committee and Site Management Leads, and also bringing with me a good working knowledge of all the Kiwiburn things. At Lakes of Fire I would get to meet and talk with their Conduct Committee to swap notes, and also work as a Site Manager to get familiar with their processes and learn how they do things there. It's skills and knowledge building. In terms of their culture too it will be informative and constructive to learn about other regionals; how they navigate issues, how they educate, how they engage with the community.

am all for burner exchanges for learning. face to face is really such a useful way to learn.

lumos first suggested a lakes of fire (LoF) exchange with artists five years ago and I reiterated it four years ago after being shoulder tapped at a Regionals meet up on the playa. both times there was not considered enough budget to allow for this, and we told LoF we'd try to get it up and running within three years. not having an event last year thwarted plans again.

I am 100% behind this happening, albeit not an artist exchange as originally mooted, and support Jo as an applicant. an exchange like this will be so useful for Kiwiburn and LoF.

we should also be thinking about what skillset we would want from the person coming from LoF in 2021.

I support this. I also suggest that we inquire about an exchange with anyone on the Lake of Fire Event Management team or Theme Camps team.

Thanks Shelley and Jaz. I really feel that the kind of on-the-job learning we'll get from an exchange will be invaluable.

Just to clarify further upon learning more info...

My flights and ticket etc will be covered by the Burner Exchange Program, which is independent from LoF. So far this program has facilitated art exchanges between LoF and Afrikaburn. Being in this case more Ops focused, I am a bit of a test subject. So there is no expectation on us to reciprocate at this stage, the flights are not cheap and I know our year off was a setback, but it's still such a valuable thing and I think we should at least start putting money aside and giving it serious thought. Like just having Doxie visit has really firmed up our FAST procedures, this year's burn perimeters were the most organised and thorough they've ever been. We absolutely could also make it an art grant and look at boosting our art representation by hosting international artists, and even better if we get someone with a range of skills they can bring. To me, it's a super exciting prospect.

For now, my application has been accepted and it's going ahead, I hope with the blessing of ExCom and community.

That is great news Jo! As you will be reprsenting Kiwiburn, this may require a vote from ExCom?
