I believe that Kiwiburn has got to the point where we should have a team like this

Fire Art Safety Team (FAST) is a team of artists, fire safety personnel and industry professionals whose mission is to provide experienced support for fire artists and to ensure the safe use of fire at Kiwiburn.

They do not currently plan cover effigy, temple and art project burns but it could be added

For Fire performers spinning, we want to ensure that

1)      there is sufficient space clearly marked out for them to perform in

2)      the appropriate fire suppression equipment is on hand

3)      there are fire safety team members watching to ensure safety for all

4)      a suitable first aid kit to handle burns etc is on hand

5)      the performers are in a fit state to work with fire

For LPG flame effect devices, we want to ensure that

1)      The equipment is well designed, built and maintained

2)      The operators are in a fit state to work it

3)      the appropriate fire suppression equipment is on hand

For Burn Barrels and Fire pits, we want to ensure that

1)      the burn barrel or fire pit is well designed, built and maintained

2)      the appropriate fire suppression equipment is on hand

3)      there is sufficient distance between the fire and any combustible materials

4)      there is a responsible person in charge of the fire

5)      the fire is extinguished at the end of the night

I am known in the NZ fire performing community as both a serious fire spinner and safety conscious person, I have also built my own LPG flame effect device after consulting with existing experts in the field.

Tim Sutcliff has skills and experience working with LPG and has expressed an interest in joining the team

We are open to any other appropriately skilled people joining the team

This was brought up in Rohanas Afterburn report. Note Sutcliffe isn't qualified as such, would this group required qualified personal?

we don't all need to be qualified to spot a shitty / unsafe gas system

a qualified person would be great but lets start working with what we have and prevent most problems

As mentioned by Generally, KAC identified the need for a specific gas fire arts health and safety protocol and requirements. This I believe has been initiated by Mike Dodds and based on the burning man protocols which he is familiar with. Nicolas Lealand would also be an ideal person for this as he has expressed interest within KAC and has experience as a professional pyrotechnician and creator of gas flame effects and sculptures.

I take it Lumos you are volunteering to organise and lead this initiative? It would be good to have s specific person heading the team to follow through and implement this.

Mike Dodds was all over this last year. Its worth contacting him and seeing how he wants to be involved for this event.

Karl and I have been talking about recruiting for H&S generally so he may have some ideas?

I have created a FAST folder in the Operations Documents folder on Dropbox and saved a copy of Pacific North West's Flame Effects Guidance (sent through by Mike Dodds) in here for reference.

Mike also forwarded a mini report on Fire ART Safety for KB17 (unofficial) including recommendations for next year. I have saved this in the FAST folder.

Question: do we wish for this to be included in this years Afterburn Report?

as mentioned earlier it would be best for the excom to call a vote on
the creation of this new dept, if that goes ahead I am happy to take
lead unless one of the other keen volunteers mentioned earlier is
better suited to the job.
Then can we be passed the list of interested people

then we get started and report back to excom through Poppy

that's my thoughts.... happy for other suggestions

Will this need a budget or are its costs already covered under other depts/teams?  If budget needed get in quick as Budget closing in 5 4 3 2 ...

Also is it intended to be only for the annual event or covering other community projects or events other than the annual one?

as mentioned earlier it needs to cover the annual event and should
also cover any other official KB event, ie official decoms etc

the job is to ensure safe use of fire in its many forms

, apart from some stationary costs I am not sure what other budget
items would be required

we may laminate up some official fire permits for the couple of burn
barrels that get official registration and some for the flame effect
devices that have been checked and then Rangers and ops can keep an
eye out for unofficial burn barrels etc because as we grow somebody is
going to try and have their own non approved fires

Is this going ahead?  Is a VOTE to create the new dept going to proceed?

Also if it goes ahead do we need to budget anything other than the minor amount Lumos has said for fire permits?  Does KB already have any and all necessary safety equipment (e.g. extinguishers) in our existing assets or do we require the fire artists to supply their own either individually or as a group of performers?

Hi Lumos

Just letting you know I'll be helping co-ordinate this as I'm taking on the H&S hat on-site to make sure our documentation and systems match. I've already been in discussion with the core Flojo crew who will manage fire spinning safety. I was under the impression we had agreed to do this summit, don't think we need a vote, just to get on with it.

Andy, anything we need for H&S can be put under the Site Office budget - like Lumos says, this should be pretty minimal.
