Hi guys, last year we discussed Kiwiburn paying for Poppy and I to get first aid certificates for pre-event safety. We both left it too late and got too busy and didn't get them! But I believe money was budgeted for it to happen.

Not sure if Poppy is still interesting in getting the cert, but Linus and I are interested in doing courses soon if this this still something that KB would like to invest in? As the Depot manager I think it makes sense for me to get it, and Linus is solid MPW member who is always around for pre- and post- event.

Looking at the St John's website, the courses are $220AUD each. I've copied what they cover below. I can book and pay for the courses pre March 31 if approved. What do you guys think?

Covers the management of:

  • Unconscious breathing person
  • Unconscious non-breathing person (CPR)
  • Applications of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Review of First Aid kits

Recognition and management of:

  • Choking & Shock
  • Injuries from head to toe
  • Wounds and bleeding
  • Burns, poisons, bites and stings
  • Exposure to heat and cold
  • Medical emergencies:
    • chest pain, asthma, anaphylaxis,
    • stroke, seizures, fainting, diabetes

I think it's a good idea to have people on site who know First Aid, although it would be a bonus rather than a necessity in terms of health and safety because of the 24 hour medics on site.

A slight aside, would it make sense to try and prioritise the wishlist at some point?

To clarify we need the training for the times when we don't have medics onsite. We were there for 29 days this year so that was 24 days without anyone trained in even basic first aid, that is also the time when we seem to do the most dodgy/dangerous stuff.

I would like to do the course but I won't have the time until July. So totally happy if Linus wants to do it instead of me.

Yep, that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying.

right.  let's add this to the list and start looking at the list as a whole (total cost) and what items pass scrutiny/priority.

If my future roles in the general scheme of things would dictate it being worth including me on the list of people to undertake such a course I would definitely like to put my name down. Seeming how much time I spent frolic around here, there, and everywhere pre-event doing the Town Planning side of things it'd definitely be worth having such skills if need be. It almost became apparent to me when that quake hit seeming as I did have an official H&S title at the time that if there were an injury or anything I should know what to do. What use is an H&S title if one has no H&S skills?

I have also been thinking a little about the H&S implications of ones Town Planning duties, especially after Karl brought it up that at the Hunterville site if we do get a serious storm/flood type scenario then we could well be facing evacuation scenario's due to the lowlands and flood plains. Curious to hear more of his thoughts on this, and also the thoughts of the landowners.

That be my thinkings.

Oliver: Linus and I are among the first to arrive on site, and among the last to leave. For this reason I feel like we would be the most effective recipients of first aid training for now. We are on-comm always (I sleep with my radio on even during pre-event) so if there are any issues, whether they be personal injury or large-scale incidents affecting numerous people, we would be available.

I will move discussion on first aid training to the wishlist thread.

The question of evacuation is something that should be discussed, maybe by the new Excom, or possibly just by the h&s team but also with the head of site management. Not sure if this will be Bruce in 2015? Something to think about.

oliver you may also find it of interest that Paul and Kirsty, the medics, are talking about taking over health and safety, so you may not need to be as concerned about your training in that area...?

That is indeed of interest. Certainly seems like a logical move on their part, especially considering they're hardly just our medics. So much respect for those two on all fronts, love em!!!

Has this been run by Paul to gain his opinion?

I think it's a great idea and should happen.

We should also be looking in to having portable emergency first aid kits for each crew that is on paddock early, one in each work vehicle kind of deal.

Sounds like a good plan, and St John courses are far better than most other providers J

Also you can never have enough first aid kits on the paddock so Hippies idea is a good one to.

we also need somebody to be responsible for checking the kits as soon as we get on site, this year we found that after a couple of days and several times when we needed plasters and antiseptic we had none until I went into town and got some (but the kit was stocked with warm beer)

What kit are you talking about Lumos?!

I think he is talking about the little first aid kit that we haven't used since we got the new big one. It was lacking in sticky plasters and antiseptic at the beginning of build.

Emergency beer is essential in all first aid kits.

well I rescued the big one from the creek where it had been tossed by somebody but it had no sticking plasters or antiseptic either

Jesus Lumos, it wasn't 'tossed by somebody' we had to unload colin in a rush as he was too heavy for the tractor to move him. We piled everything up as close to the creek as possible so there was room for the tractor and the containers, the first aid kit and some other things got knocked in to the creek during the chaos.

I stock the first aid kit for the season when I arrive on site. I am usually one of the first on site but missed the move this year. This will not be an issue in future.

NEXT.
