Hey,

I have received a couple of emails regarding potential art in the river, I have given very vague answers both times because I am aware of neighbours and the safety risks, but its worth asking, is river art ok? and if yes what are the conditions that need to be met past making sure there are no risks to swimmers? of course the obvious questions are:
- Whats your health and safety plan?
- How will you secure it so it doesn't float away?
- Does it have any hard edges? how big is it? etc

Is river art a straight no or a we need x info before we can say.

Cheers,
Mel

Highly likely there will be restrictions as the river is a public corridor and is deemed navigable i.e. it is used boats (in particular jet boats) and other craft.  You have raised several key concerns such as health & safety and then there is the aspect of pollution and general impact on the immediate environment.

Control of rivers is complex with various government departments and regional Councils and local Iwi being either responsible or having an input to the management of different parts or aspects of it e.g the water itself, the riverbed. surrounding land, without necessarily there being one controlling body.

My personal view is that at the moment unless someone else has some spare time to volunteer to investigate it that the current team of event organisers will not have spare resource to pursue this but it could be something we could look at in the future.

yeah the big thing is keeping the river clear and useable for boats. its actually quite a busy river, and we get quite a few boats going up and down on a fairly regular basis.

personally i'd love to be able have art in the river but not really sure how this would be possible at the moment

Thanks Mel. Both Andy and Ronan have summed it up very well.
Hopefully they can redesign their art in to an art car to float across the paddock :)
