Our next meeting with be at Pie in the Sky Pizza (Vandy location)
located on 110 Lyle Avenue, just off West End Avenue between Courtyard
and Hampton Inn, on Thursday April 2nd at 5:15pm. Sorry about the
short notice but I hope some of you can make it.
At our last meeting we discussed the possibility of entering a team
into the current Open Architecture Challenge to redesign the portable
classroom. There was some difficulty finding a school to partner with,
as the Nashville city schools are currently reducing their inventory
of portable classrooms and the likelihood of one being built was
slim.
However, I am excited to announce out partnership with Lynn Miller,
executive director of Trees of Healing Ministry in Kenya, East Africa.
Kenya is one of the poorest countries in Africa and fifth leading in
HIV/AIDS globally, a situation attributed to extreme poverty levels,
high unemployment, and a general lack of the basic necessities of
life. In a country like Kenya where 80% of the population of the
population lives below the poverty line, life expectancy has
drastically reduced where diseases are many.
Trees of Healing is an incredible organization that works on issues
such as disease prevention and mitigation (malaria, HIV/ AIDS),
tuberculosis), a lack of sanitary water supply, education, and a
shortage of the basic necessities of life caused by high levels of
poverty. They work with pregnant women, mothers and orphaned
children.
Trees of Healing is currently seeking funding to construct and equip
both a medical health center and a school in the Tharaka district of
Kenya. The health center will consist of:
Out Patient Department
In Patient Department
Labor Ward
Pediatric Ward
Laboratory
Kitchen
Laundry Facilities
Operating Room
Pharmacy
Volunteer Counseling Center and Ward for HIV/AIDS
Medical Records office, administrative office
Isolation ward for contagious diseases
Staff Housing
We would also like to begin work on the design of the school. I spoke
with Cameron Sinclair and we could use Trees of Healing Ministry as
our client for the competition. Even if an entry is not ready in time
for the competition, it is certainly a project worth taking on a
chapter.
Hope to see you there. Call me if you need directions, have questions
etc
