Hi folks,

After the last developer meet, I chatted with a couple folks about Kubernetes - both in terms of versionable infrastructure, and also how it could simplify coordination of multiple deployments, multitenancy, and so forth.

We thought it would be good to take some of that forward as a community-supportable, properly-polished workflow - that will involve tidying the proof-of-concept Arches Kubernetes flow used at F&T, linking up with the Docker enhancements that the folks at Farallon are doing, and addressing config questions (default settings for back-up, GDPR features, scaling, storage, liveness/healthchecks, Arches-specific monitoring, etc.)

The focus will be specifically technical, but keen to keep anyone who is even curious in the loop - if you would be keen to join, can you please reply, and we will try to coordinate time for a session? The next few weeks for us are pretty hectic, with Easter in the middle, and I expect similarly for others, but keen to get date-picking started now - perhaps early May, where hopefully people's calendars still have plenty of space?

Even though it's a starting point, I would like this to be hands on, so I think leaving 2-3h would be good. Ideally, we could try and break things to see what falls over - that's always the fun bit of infrastructure!

All the best,
Phil

Phil, I'm interested in joining in. I won't be about until the end of April also.

Thanks
Andy

I'd also be interested, at the very least to listen in.

We could really use a documentation update on Docker support in Arches, and perhaps the meeting can help with that in some way as well.

Adam

Hi Phil,

Great idea to have a hands-on session for Kubernetes, and I appreciate your effort in getting the ball rolling.  I'd like to join (as would others here at Farallon), and the early May timing sounds good.

Cheers,

Dennis

I'm interested to listen in as well (if I have time on the chosen date).

Best,
Vincent

Great, many thanks folks - since this is likely to be a fairly cosy group and we will need to overlap start/end of working day for West Coast and UK/EU attendees, this might work as a first try:

May
[A] Thu 20th 8-10am PDT // 4-6pm BST
[B] Tue 25th 8-10am PDT // 4-6pm BST
[C] Wed 26th 8-10am PDT // 4-6pm BST

June
[D] Tue 15th 8-10am PDT // 4-6pm BST
[E] Wed 16th 8-10am PDT // 4-6pm BST

If folks can quickly indicate which (if any) of A-E would work, then if one fits for all those who responded to the first email, we will get it in the diary - otherwise, I will set up a Doodle with a wider range of options. (although all are 8-10am=4-6pm, so if half-an-hour earlier or later would make it feasible, do say).

All the best

Great - thanks all! Let's say B - Tue 25th, 8am-10am PDT, 4-6pm BST. I will follow up with a bit more detail nearer the time on structure.

Any thoughts or requests, perhaps share in this thread. (unless this could/should be transitioned to Discourse?)

All the best,
Phil

Hi Phil,

I think the following could be interesting to dive into . . .

1. Reviewing the current Docker scripts and patterns to see how they can best support Kubernetes
        - I think it would also be nice to develop a pattern that would allow docker scripts to support new and existing Arches projects that may be stored in a repository
        - Develop/discuss a way for Docker/Kubernetes to support db migrations that are common when upgrading versions of Arches
2. Identify potential modifications to core Arches that could improve scaling/load balancing made available by Kubernetes
3. Discuss resource management and monitoring options available with Kubernetes

Happy for any input if these topics have already been covered or don't make sense for this meeting.

Cheers,
Ryan

Thanks Ryan, that is very helpful!

Just to make double-sure of visibility on both platforms during the switch-over, signposting here on Google Groups also: I have put a follow-up post onto Discourse with suggested structure for next week: https://community.archesproject.org/t/kubernetes-meet-workshop/1100/13?u=phil_weir1

With best wishes,
Phil

Apologies if this is a duplicate, but just to make sure everyone gets it OK:

I have not run registration with Zoom before, so please feed back if it does not work when you try!

Register in advance for this meeting:
https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0ucu-urDIsHtUVFNxeQvNJiN-vl6alGNHK

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. Given it is close to the meeting, if I do not see sign-ups from folks who have posted here beforehand, I may send direct calendar invites to ensure you have the joining details to hand when we start.

All the best,

Phil Weir
