Dear Colleagues,

The ASOR workshop "Topics in Cyberinfristructure, Digitial Humanities,
and Near Eastern Archaeology" has been approved for the next three
years.

The 2011 topic is: "Communicating Digital Landscapes in Archaeology"

We are seeking participants to add to the program who (1) have a
project related to this theme to demonstrate or (2) are interested in
discussing the broader themes listed below. Please feel free to
comment here in the Google group or send me a separate email
(ska...@alexandriaarchive.org) if you're interested in taking part.
Please also feel free to broadcast this message to interested parties
or lists.

2011 ASOR Workshop: "Communicating Digital Landscapes in Archaeology"

Overview: Archaeologists increasingly rely upon GIS, remote sensing,
and other computer-aided techniques to understand ancient landscapes.
While the research methods and datasets are increasingly
sophisticated, communicating that research remains oriented toward the
printed journal. Such journals have little capacity to communicate
large and complex datasets associated with research in digital
landscapes. This workshop will focus on strategies to orient digital
tools and infrastructure to expand interpretive potentials of digital
landscape data, and close an important gap in scholarly
communications. In order to frame discussion, three to five
discussants will speak briefly about the following topics:

1. How do we integrate digital mapping data into more general streams
of scholarly communication and public awareness, including web-based
communication?
2. Policy and technical methods to reduce risks (such as site
security) while improving the research and educational impact of
sharing landscape data
3. The National Science Foundation now requires "data access and
management" plans of grant seekers. What are "best practices" for
formulating such plans with respect to geospatial data? Will such
plans matter in terms of success in grant seeking and in terms of
improved communication and preservation of digital landscape data?

A demonstration period will precede the workshop. If you have a
project that uses computer-aided techniques to explore ancient
landscapes, this is an opportunity for you to demonstrate it and get
valuable feedback from colleagues working with the same challenges.

Please contact us if you are interested in taking part.

Sarah, you know I'm certainly happy to participate in any way I can,
although it may also be good vary the voices and since I participated
last year I am happy to just be present. However, I'm happy to do
anything needed!

This workshop sounds great! Unfortunately I do not have any research to share related to landscapes, but I am happy to attend. Looking forward to your future sessions on cyber-infrastructure.
