to <transit café> ARCH7201-2009 PLACING MOTIONS
Dear all,
We are going to work in two groups from tomorrow (WK-3) and on:
Group A : Wynyard Station + Artarmon Station
Group B : Redfern Station + Milsons Point Station
As stated in the Brief, groups will have access to one instructor once
a week, with Instructors alternating every second week. We believe
this give the students the best exposure to both instructors’
strengths and specialities. We note however that each group has access
to that instructor for that week only, as a result you will not have
access to two crits in one tutorial.
For tomorrow, Ramin will work with Redfern Station + Milsons Point
Station groups. Please come in early, at 930 AM for Ramin's group. He
has to end the day before 5 PM.
Shaowen will come around the same time and work with Wynyard Station +
Artarmon Station groups. She is leaving for Brisbane around 830 PM and
must get of UNSW before 6 PM.
Since we have a total of 13 students and we do have a lunch lecture
plus studio talk at 3 PM (Russell Lowe is going to talk about the
application of digital means for representation), I plan to impose a
strict time slot for discussion and feedbacks.
For Shaowen's Group:
Please gather all the materials you have got and be prepared for a
clear and comprehensive communication. The list of design guidance for
train station in general and for your own proposal in particular must
be ready for comment.
The most urgent issues that must be dealt with for Group A
individually are as following:
Artamon Station
Nick - A revised and corrected version of your S1 with comprehensive
sections through the proposed area of intervention; options for
spatial patterning and site plan based on your program; what are the
architectural elements and how do they relate/
John - precedent study of OMA's McCormick Center at IIT, the enlarged
and detailed sections through relocated train track and proposed
intervention, how do the proposed 5 building-zone relate to one and
another and what are the options to organize proposed programmatic
elements?
Carl - the plan and section showing clearly the train track and the
proposed light rail: area concerned, how do they relate to each other?
where could the interchange station be, options? what are the elements
that come with the new interchange and how are they going to connect
with the proposed programs extended from the interchange? have you
thought about the idea of "landscape park as the town center", and
what is it programmatically + spatially?
Leonard - must have the detailed sectional drawings showing the
existing + proposed RLs, a list of proposed spaces and their
architectural implications; options for site + spatial organization;
ideas for the "block" and the encaged "line". must study room-based
large organization: how to do it and what are the options?
Raymond - what is this "new precinct" you are creating: the program,
the architectural elements and the main zones for organization; where
are the boundaries and what are their characteristics? is there a
front-and-back in your proposed zone of town center or is it "an area"
and if so, what defines it? Most importantly, how do you relate the
"external" of your proposed precinct?
Wynyard Station
Wayne - further differentiate and develop your spatial and
programmatic organizations: in plan, section and the detailed/high-
lighted areas; consolidate your options and articulate them; study
patterns by models: organizational, spatial and circulation. remember
in your S!, the sectional relationship is not clear and what exactly
is the 3-concourse idea?
Helen - communicate your proposal again with better drawings, diagrams
and possibly conceptual models. it is alright if you present all in
fragments as long as you can articulate your overall picture or big
ideas. the 3 types of circulation: how do they work and how are they
going to relate to one and another? do they come together at some
point?
Joan - adding in more detailed existing conditions at the same time
constructing your bigger picture through collage of each space being
intervened; structural analysis of the connectivity: circulation
within the station and the outer urban fabric, vertical relations and
the proposed vertical zone including light court, you can have a
series of detailed locational vignettes before arriving an overall
"image". working simultaneously with 2 kinds of scale.
Pengfei - corrected S1 following the feedbacks, further articulation
of your proposal architecturally. must start building study models.
Andrew - revision of S1 with clearer definition of your ideas, the
layers new "transit planes" and how do they relate to one and another
+ the rest of the existing fabric (list of the architectural elements
that will foster your intervention). lots of sectional drawings and
diagrammatic analysis + organizational patterns of your proposed
program. need to define the public domain in your proposed area of
intervention: public, semi-public and exclusive areas; must clarify
your proposal for the train station.
Livee - Further define and differentiate your vertical and horizontal
"elements": what could they be + how can they relate? start to
designate the critical "zones" both in movement and placement so you
can start to "play" with the organizational patterns. More study
models and small + specific vignettes.
Lee Shean - further strengthen your S1 and solidify your proposal in
clearly communicated drawings; establish all architectural elements
that will realize your proposed intervention in an interesting and
ambitious way. urban lounge? what is it exactly in program and as an
intervening strategy? how does the retail concourse relate to George
St?
Kammy - will talk to you with Ramin. you must have a definitive
program now and start to arrange the elements involved. tone down your
proposal to a degree that you can handle in a meaningful way.
