Hi All, place your tips and tricks for using Sandbox2 here.

Keep in mind this thread isn't for full tutorials, but quick one line
helpful suggestions.

I'll kick off with:

There is an eyedropper button in the material editor window. The
eyedropper will take you directly to the material used on any object
you click on ... a good trick if you want your material to be like one
in the game ... you find a material you like on an object then copy
it's properties.

Cheers

Hey peeps,

If your Sandbox 2 suffers inconsistent frame rates when you raise your
graphic settings, and it looks like a complete shocker when you lower
them, you can customize your settings to sacrifice only the less
important graphic features while keeping the ones that make your map
looks good. Use the console key (the tilde key, on the left of the
'1'). There are over 1600 commands you can use in the console, and an
abridged list, sorted into command types are found here:

http://www.biocookies.com/bio-center/crysis-bio-center/crysis-info/crysis-wars-consol-commands

Most obviously you will be interested in the 'performance/graphics'
category, but if you're feeling devious or brave you can play with the
others. The kind writer of the internet page also was generous enough
to give you descriptions of what each command does. Simply type the
one you want (usually followed by a set value integer) into the
console on Sandbox 2. There is a steep learning curve and quite a lot
of fiddling is required to get exactly what you want, but the result
is a minimal loss of quality, while speeding up your program.

Hey everyone!
I just learned how to add different materials to your environment and
thought i would share it with you in case you don't know yet.
-In the top menu bar go Terrain - Texture.
-Click add layer in the Layer tasks menu on left hand side
-click on the name of the layer where it shows up in the list to
change the name of it, which will be useful if you have a few of them
in the end...
--then go to left side of dialogue box and click 'Change layer
texture' which is above the big box with the picture of the texture in
it.
- a dialogue box appears and you can look for the type of look you
want in your environment.
-click it and press open, and remember what folder it was in and the
exact name of it.
-then go to your named layer in the list and click on the blue writing
so that you can change the colour to correspond with your choice
before.
-find your choice of material in the list on the left hand side of the
box and click it, then on the bottom of that box is a tab that says
terrain texture layers, click it, and you will go back to the original
dialogue box. make sure your new layer is selected and click "assign
material" which is located on the left in the "layer tasks" menu.
-then to paint the new terrain onto your environment, exit the
dialogue box and go to the Rollup Bar, and click on the terrain tab,
then click Layer Painter, and select your named layer and start
painting!
I hope this helps!
Rebecca :)

If you want to get rid of the info and writing that appears in the top
right hand corner of the screen (and shows up in your screenshots), go
to tools > user commands > displayInfo. This will disable it.

My tips are simple ones that many of us forget about doing...
There are two tips.
The first is BREATH!
If it feels as though you have been banging your head against a brick wall trying to conquer this program or this assignment, or whatever it may be... Take a step back. And breath! Deep long breaths or even taking 10 minutes out to meditate and clear your mind.
The second step is to exercise!
Once you have stepped back from banging your head, walk outside of the house in your gym gear and RUN! Put on some good music (I recommend loud screamo punk!) and forget about the project... You could also do weights, dance, cycle, swim, pole dance, box, skip... Anything!
Once you are sweaty and have your endorphins going, come back and start from where you were...

Exercise decreases the stress hormones such as cortisol and increases endorphins.  Endorphins are the body’s natural feel good chemicals, and when they are released through exercise, your mood is boosted naturally.  As well endorphins, exercise also releases adrenaline, serotonin, and dopamine.  These chemicals work together to make you feel good....

If you feel good, I would like to think that we work better and therefor produce better results.

This is the ONLY thing that gets me through our assignments, without taking deep breaths and exercising I don't think I could accomplish anything!

Good luck!

My Tip is about Flow Graphs
If you want to test to see if your new Flow Graph works set it up to
a "Misc:start" first. This will set your new Flow Graph going as soon
as you enter the game, no need to worry about if the "trigger" is
working.

Tip for Flow Graphs: (on Windows 7 32 bit)

In Russell's tutorial on Moving Entity: he mentioned that Windows 7 32
bit has problem finding the coordinates of the object you want to
elevate.

I tried using the select tool and clicking onto the entity where the
coordinates show up on the bottom bar.
BUT that is WRONG - they are NOT the coordinates of your entity. it is
the position where you're clicking at.

I was trying to go through the toolbar to see if there's an option to
display the coordinates similar to the one in the tutorial down at the
bottom of the editor window.
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME trying to find it.

unless someone accidentally stumbled across an alternative,
the only way is to use flow graphs.
Follow the instructions from the tutorial: 04:42-06:18

to fill in the Destination of the Movement:MoveEntityTo box,
you have to enter the environment i.e. Ctrl G
trigger the debug message
and on the left hand top corner: there are figures up to 6 decimal
places, in order: x, y, z coordinates.

due to the fact that windows 7 32 bit don't have the coordinates bar,
you won't be able to adjust position of your elevator to a "nice and
even" number similar to Russell's tutorial.

so make sure you write down the coordinates CORRECTLY to insert the
"Destination" coordinates.

ALSO: how to make clouds~

I've overheard people from studio asking around, "how DO YOU make
clouds?"
and the only person who made clouds: "there's a lot of tutorials on
clouds - go to Youtube"

so I did today - and found this simple tutorial:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIRUbIfbG1k

I just followed the steps - and everything works well
you'll get awesome MOVING clouds

So if you're interested, have fun checking it out~!!

My tip for Sandbox2:

Use the computer labs on weekends- the lab computers don't crash quite as often an my laptop, and there's probably someone there who knows how to use sandbox better than you and they may be able to help.

In addition to Kirra's sound advice below- Breath & Exercise:

"Eat Food, Not too much, Mostly Plants" - Michael Pollan In defence of Food

If you have trouble identifying real food, follow these simple rules:

  1. Don't eat anything your great grandmother wouldn't recognize as food.
  2. Don’t eat anything with more than five ingredients, or ingredients you can't pronounce.
  3. Don't eat anything that won't eventually rot.
  4. Stay out of the middle of the supermarket; shop on the perimeter of the store. Real food tends to be on the outer edge of the store near the loading docks, where it can be replaced with fresh foods when it goes bad.

cathyyy~

the coordinates don't appear until you use the flow graph for the
entity and follow the steps:

#1 - right click> Add Node> HUD > DisplayDebugMessage
#2 - right click> Add Node> Entity> GetPos
#3 - right click> Add Node> Input> Key (this is where u assign the
TRIGGER KEY e.g. L)

#4 - from Entity:GetPos box: link "Pos" to "message" in the
HUDDisplayDebugMessage box
#5 - from Input:Key box: link "Pressed" to "Get" in the Entity:GetPos
box.

so when you enter your environment i.e. Ctrl G,
just type "L" and the coordinates will appear.

you can use any other letters you want.
but make sure the letter isn't one of the triggers from the game.
e.g. from tutorial: "M" is for map. so don't use "M".

michael - so those simple rules include fruit??
they eventually rot.

Hi all;

A quick tip that isn' t at all vital for any part of the experiment,
but which I thought was very cool.

To make FLASHING LIGHTS simply select your light, then look for the
'light style' option under 'style'.
The default setting is zero, | think, and changing this to a different
will give you a light that flashes in various ways.
What you might use this for I have no idea -aircraft signallers on top
of your monstrously tall bridge, perhaps?

I used these in Exp2 to make Hawking's Lab especially disorientating.

Anyway, have fun.

At first, most of us would have placed one tree after another. Time
consuming.

But no worries people! You could paint the vegetation.

- Go to the 'Roll up Bar' on the side and click on 'Terrain', then
'Vegetation'
- Under 'Vegetation' click 'Add Vegetation Category'; name the group
of what so vegetation you are doing. eg. trees
- Now click on 'Add Vegetation Object', a navigator box will pop up,
all you need to do is find your 'tree objects' it should be in your
crytek folder, game and natural.
- Click on the big box that says 'Paint Objects', make sure your tree
object is selected (the dot goes red); you could change the radius of
the brush by sliding the bar left and right.

Hope that heaps!!

Annie. =)

Russell mentioned this briefly during the lecture, but if you're
looking to create something like an overhang, cave or tunnel, you'll
need to use voxel objects.

- In the 'roll up bar' go to the 'objects' tab, and click on Misc >
Voxel Object and place it where you are planning to create your
overhang/cave/etc
- Under 'vegetation' click on 'holes' and make a hole where you plan
to have the overhang/etc. Make sure you make it larger than the size
you intend to have so that you don't have any messy edges (it'll look
like a jagged hole in your landscape, but that'll be fixed later)
- Then create another 'VoxelObject' and place it in approximately the
same place as the original one, and then select 'copy terrain to
voxel' (which is towards the bottom of the roll up bar)
- Then under 'vegetation' click on 'voxel painter' and you can select
whether to subtract (for caves etc) or create (add landforms).
From there you essentially just paint where you want the hole to go.

Here is a link to a video tutorial on voxel objects as well:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmPQ6F6DllM&feature=related

Hope that helps (and makes sense)

To keep vegetation look realistic without having to resize/ rotate
each one, upon selecting the preferred vegetation in the roll-up bar
on the right, consider the following:
- RandomRotation: this makes the computer randomly orient your
vegetation
- AlignToTerrain: useful for things that might not grow upwards and
for trees on gentle hills.
- UseTerrainColour: This helps the vegetation blend in with the
surroundings a bit more. Personally I use it for things like grass and
sometimes even shrubbery, but it's no good for trees.
- SizeVar: This automatically changed the size of the vegetation so
that not every piece you put on is identical in size. 0.1-0.5 are good
values to type into the box.
- CastShadow: Finally, for more realistic rendering, the Cast Shadow
box should be checked.

Then you can just
- select the vegetation you want to place (the dot next to it will go
from blue to red)
- click the 'Snap To Terrain' button, along the top of toolbar
- hold shift on your keyboard, and click away!

You will find that if you did all of the above things, that the
vegetation will not all be identical in orientation, size, relation to
terrain, as well as cast shadows and (sometimes) blend in a bit better
with the surroundings.
If you want to move a placed bit of vegetation just stay in the
vegetation tab in the roll-up bar, hold shift, and select the one you
want to move.

Hi again,

This one is a repost for The Tourist: I've noticed a few other
students have found it very helpful ...

Cheers

"Hi All,
I have 2 tips one might be a lot more useful than the other.
Tip 1: Instead of spending hours dragging Vegetation into your Crysis
Level one by one from the Roll up bar/brush there is a command to
“DISTRIBUTE” the vegetation throughout the level :
Click > View
> Open View Panel
> Database View
> Vegetation
You then notice in the info bar on the left hand side of the Database
View dialogue box a few there are a few headings:
-Groups
-Instances
-Manage
-Info
-Preview
The next step is to click the “Add” button under the Groups heading,
then a second dialogue box will open asking you what type of
vegetation you would like to add the folder to look in is:
Game/objects/natural/trees for trees for example when you find your
selected vegetation you click open. The second dialogue box will then
close and your selection will automatically appear in the right hand
side of your Database View panel.
Make sure that an eye looking icon can be seen next to your selected
geometry in the same section this means that the layer is turned on.
Then the next step is to click “Distribute” under the Instances
heading and WALLAH! Instant Rain Forest you can add as many different
types of vegetation as you like..
2 further points to make about your new Rainforest-
1. You can still delete and move the Vegetation the same way as you
can with all objects, and
2. If you find it difficult to see because of the amount of
Vegetation you can turn the layer off in the roll up panel under the
>
Terrain (the green icon)
> Vegetation
You ll see the new category you just made under the objects (it will
probably be called default) it will have a ticked box next to it by
clicking it you can turn the tick on and off.
Tip 2: and maybe not so helpful just to add on the earlier tread
about
relaxing techniques... have a beer, A herd of buffalo can move only
as
fast as the slowest buffalo. When the herd is hunted, it is the
slowest and the weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This
natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the
general
speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular
culling of the weakest members. In much the same way the human brain
can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells intake of
alcohol,
we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest
and weakest brain cells first regular consumption of beer eliminates
the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient
machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers, so try
it while you are playing around with you environment it will help you
relax. Enjoy
Disclaimer: Always drink responsibly

Hi Guys,

I just found this webpage which has some of the hotkeys for SandBox2.

http://wiki.crymod.com/index.php/Sandbox2_Editor_Hotkeys

The really interesting hotkey is this one (which I never knew
existed!) ...Ctrl+Shift+LMB When you are in move mode with an entity
selected, press Ctrl+Shift+Left mouse button to move the pivot point
of the selected entity to the position you clicked.

This would help with rotating entities if yo didn't have them setup
around the 0,0,0 point in Sketchup.

Hey all,

I found this rather helpful for myself, a few people have found that
they aren't seeing the track lines when using sequences, or boxes
around objects in the world. At first I, along with a few other people
in my studio classes assumed it was a graphics error or something
along those lines. It seems so silly now, but at the time this was a
big headache. Those lines and object boxes are part of the "Helps"
Sandbox2 has. To make the Helps appear it was as simple as turning it
on, Display>Show/Hid Helpers or Shift+Space.

This may seem like a useless tip but it would have helped me knowing
this when I started using Sandbox2. Cheers,

HI,
I just solved my material problem with Jules help. the tip is all
Crysis materials will revert back to default everytime you restart
Crysis, thats what happened to me, everytime i restart Crysis, the
material i just assigned was gone. So, the right way to do this is,
1. select the object that u want, then go to material editor.
2. find the material u want, and copy all the settings and textures
from the Crysis material to your objects material.

hope that helps.
cheers

And another tip, if you could call the last one a tip,
When you are taking your level from your laptop and putting it onto
the uni computers (if you want/need to), make sure to get the whole
level folder, because this contains not only the level but also the
textures and other things that you have used to enhance your level. If
you just take the crysis file and not the other things, they won't
show up when you open it on the other computer you are teansferring it
to.

not sure if others have this problem, i found it sometimes hard to
find my component after i've created one. when you press on the object
again, it appears as if it hasn't been created into a component,
instead i was still just selecting on the surface itself.

i find that this problem can be solved when you firstly select the
objects that you want to create a component to first form a group
first, and then you edit the group and select all of the objects to
form a component. this way, the component is still selected after
you've pressed the 'create' button.

hope that helps :)

Hi Guys,

Angus: that last tip is important for everyone to remember when
uploading their crysis files to filefront (or similar) ... otherwise
your tutors can't play your maps and grade them properly.

This tip cold go into the Sketchup tips and tricks too ...

Remember that there is a maximum polycount of 10,000 for models ...
meaning that If they are over 10,000 polygons they won’t be imported.

In Sketchup: If you go window > model info > statistics > and check
out the faces you’ll see how many polys you have in your model.

Another way to get a quick idea is to turn on hidden geometry (this
will also show you where the model is most complex, and where you need
to reduce it ... or break it up into parts) so: view > hidden
geometry.

A lot of polys are created if you make round things with many
sides ... if you are creating a round column (or sphere) from a
circle, when you first click on the circle tool look to the bottom
right of the screen and you’ll see how many sides it has ... type in a
lower amount and then hit enter.

I would also recommend splitting your model up into parts ... and if
an element is repeated multiple times, just create one (in SketchUp)
and copy it multiple times in Sandbox2.

Cheers
