You have to realize they are part of CORTEX which is dedicated to serving as an incubator for startups. They have to charge more to pay staff and provide way more equipment than AR. Both Made and AR have their places in the community. MADE is MAKER oriented and has a corporate / business mentality, AR is HACKER oriented. They are not really competing with AR. CORTEX has tried this model before and it failed financially. We will just have to wait and see if this attempt is successful. If you read MAKE Magazine, you will see that it has worked in other cities. I do like that you can take classes without being a member, but I'm sure they provide a paid staff to provide that service, which is not in AR's budget.

That's just my opinion.

Well and thats all fair.  Just in case anyone is interested, it looks like you can take any class without being a member but they are not free classes.  The laser cutting class is 3hrs and costs $250.  That said, at that point its obviously a much more detailed covering of the topic, so you hopefully get what you pay for to some degree.
